This season, it’s easy for consumers to get overwhelmed by “skincare deals.”

As a dermatologist, I often see patients who invest in trending products that simply don’t deliver results. Here are three over-the-counter products I wouldn’t buy, and what truly works instead:

1️⃣ “Pore-shrinking” toners. They can’t make pores smaller; most just strip the skin. Try a niacinamide serum like The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc or Naturium Niacinamide Serum 12%.

2️⃣ “Dark spot erasers” that promise overnight results. Most lack active ingredients strong enough to fade pigmentation. Opt for La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Serum or Eucerin Anti-Pigment Dual Serum.

3️⃣ “Anti-aging” creams that only moisturize. Without retinol or peptides, these formulas don’t target aging at a cellular level. I recommend Allies of Skin Retinal & Peptides Night Cream or Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream.
