As a physician who uses lifestyle to prevent illness, many patients often assume that I am also anti-vaccine. THAT COULD NOT BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH. Prevention of death and disease through vaccination is essential to living long healthy lives.

I find it astounding that people are willing to risk for their children death, fatal neurogic disease, deafness, and a host of other complications for a completely preventable disease. These complications are staggeringly more common with disease than any adverse effect of vaccination. With 2 doses of MMR vaccine you can prevent greater 99% of cases measles, not to mention mumps and rubella.

What is happening in our backyards is inexcusable. It is being propagated by people with short memories, not knowing what it was like for infant and childhood deaths and disease prior to routine vaccines.

B12 and folate deficiency can contribute to a host of neurologic problems when severe, but can contribute to low energy and mood with moderate insufficiency or deficiency. Vitamin B12 comes from animal products. I often come across patients who eat plenty of animal products, but are nevertheless deficient in vitamin B 12. There can be many different reasons for deficiency and usually this is some thing that will need to be worked up with a doctor. However, supplementation can be really helpful for many people. Methylated supplementation can be helpful for those known to have a MTHFR genetic mutation.

Studies have shown that, despite previous thinking, there is no safe amount of alcohol. Alcohol increases risk for many different types of cancer, increases empty, calorie intake, and damages the liver. Not to mention it disrupts our sleep architecture. If you’re going to have a dry January, good for you! Pay attention to the effects that avoiding alcohol has on your body. You may notice it feels better than you would’ve thought. It’s OK to not have a drink to wind down. It’s OK not to have a drink with dinner. It’s OK to save an alcoholic beverage for only every once in a while. And today more than ever, we have so many fun alcohol free alternatives available to us. I’ll join you in your dry January.

Say no to fish burps!! Omega-3 fatty acids coming from fish oils are super common supplement. The DHA to be more helpful for brain health, and the EPA tends to be more helpful for heart health. Regardless, people always complain that they taste fish all day after they take certain supplements. Some of the highly refined or prescribed fish oils can be a little less likely to cause fishy taste in the mouth, and some supplements bought over-the-counter have added flavors to help with this. keeping your fish oil in the freezer helps to reduce that side effect of this supplement. Beware of certain natural products.

This is why I talk about looking for products with USP certification. This means that there is an independent 3rd party verifying purity (free of contaminants and unlisted compounds) and potency (the listed dosage/concentration of active ingredients).

GMP certification means that the product is manufactured in a facility that uses good manufacturing practices and consistently adhere to quality standards.

Food can be love when we use it to build community, but it can be harmful if we use it to silence our feelings, avoid unpleasant emotions, or distract ourselves from dealing with stress, sadness, anger, or frustration. When we use food in this context it often leads to more mental and physical health problems. Trying to avoid using food as a “bribe” for kids or feeding our kids when they have problems may help to reduce our society’s reliance on food to help quash negative emotions. Certain foods have the right combination of less healthy ingredients that even briefly increase our “feel good” neurotransmitters in the brain, so eating can be almost addictive it it’s effect, especially when we don’t feel good to begin with. Seeking out support from other beings, like friends, family, and animals may be more effective to help feel better in the long term.
