Stay Safe Florida!!!
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
1. Every home must have at least one phone that works without electricity (the corded phones). This way, in case of an outage, you’ll have access to a phone.
2. Make sure your cell phones are fully charged. Save the cells for important calls; don’t use them for conversations that can wait until after the hurricane.
3. It’s always a good idea to have a battery-operated radio to keep track of the storm.
4. If you store water in bathtubs for baths, etc., add a couple of caps of bleach to prevent the buildup of algae.
5. Turn your fridge & freezer to the coldest setting so that if electricity goes off, your food can last relatively longer. It’s always a good idea to put an extra gallon of milk and bread in the
freezer to give them longevity. Add a few containers of water to make ice.
6. Buy foods like muffins, cakes, cookies, cereals, bread, jam, peanut butter, bagels, fruits, ready-made puddings, jello etc to have readily available foods in case of an outage. Canned foods: macaroni & cheese, corn, carrots, mixed vegetables, baked beans, tuna, shredded chicken, salmon etc. Drinks: water & soda can last without electricity.
7. Don’t forget the paper plates and cups, spoons etc.
8. Make sure you have plenty of drinking water.
9. Depending on your area, if you decide that shutters on windows are not needed, make sure that blinds and drapes cover the windows. In case a window breaks, blinds and curtains can prevent the glass from flying into the house.
10. If your bed happens to be next to a window, pull the bed away from it before you go to sleep. 11. All doors and windows should be tightly shut. Loose windows have a higher tendency to crack. 12. Remember to bring all patio furniture indoors including any planters or other items that could be projectiles into your windows and sliding doors. If any furniture seems to be too heavy to be brought inside, just turn it upside down to decrease the chances of damage.
13. Loose roof tiles from your house or your neighbor’s houses can also fly into your windows and sliding doors. So we all have an obligation to make sure our roofs are clear of any loose
materials.
14. Let your AC run cold all day before the hurricane so that if there is an outage, your home will stay cool for a longer time.
15. Remember to stock up on flashlights and batteries.
16. Of course, fill up your vehicles with gas.
17. If you have generators, make sure it is outside the house and stock up on gas and motor oil.
18. Place a carbon monoxide detector inside the house, closest to the generator that is outside. 18. It’s always a good idea to have a set of propane burners for cooking in an outage. You’ll find good ones on the internet on “camping goods websites” for $ 29.99 and up. If you have one of these, or a grill, stock up on propane tanks.
19. Make sure you have enough medication to last you until after the storm.
20. If you are on oxygen, remember to have plenty of backup tanks.
21. It is always a good idea to shower, do your laundry, etc., and cook before a storm hits so that you have some readily available food for the next day or two. Cook foods that can be eaten cold.
