January is Thyroid Awareness Month, a critical time to evaluate the protocols in place for thyroid-related procedures, such as fine-needle aspiration (FNA) 💉.

Contaminants introduced during these procedures such as ultrasound gel can pose significant risks to patient outcomes:

🔎 Impairs the visibility of cells and interferes with staining of cells
📈 Causes a significant increase in the number of slides with artefacts
🦠 Causes widespread cell lysis, increasing the risk of misinterpretation and a false positive diagnosis
⚠️ Mimics colloid, creating difficulty in differentiation between artefact and colloid
