Can someone please help me understand this?
If your vision started to get blurry, most people are immediately getting their eyes checked. But if your hearing starts to sound muffled, you will put it off as long as you can. Why???

I’ve been an audiologist for over 10 years, here’s what I’d tell you if I wasn’t afraid to hurt your feelings:

1. Being able to hear, but “not understand” means you likely have a hearing loss. 98% of people are not mumbling, you need your hearing tested.

2. Hearing aids didn’t work for you because
➡️ You waited too long - the longer you wait the harder it is to treat.
➡️ You had the wrong provider - you need someone who follows best practices.
➡️ You didn’t follow the provider’s recommendations - you have to wear them full-time, not just when you “need” them, they aren’t reading glasses.
➡️ You have unrealistic expectations - hearing aids are not a cure all and you will need to implement good communication strategies to be maximally successful.
➡️ Or many other reasons. Hearing loss is a medical diagnosis and it is nuanced. Seek out an evaluation sooner rather than later from a reputable provider.

3. Yes, hearing aids and related services can be expensive. The hearing aids are small incredible computers, but they are nothing without the expertise of the provider. You get what you pay for.

4. Being exposed to a loud sound, even once (i.e. a gunshot) can and will cause hearing damage. Wear your hearing protection.

If you don’t have your hearing protection in correctly, it won’t work! If you must use the foam earplugs, follow these steps👇🏻

✔️ squeeze and roll them tightly
✔️ pull up and back on your ear
✔️ place the earplug deep in your ear
✔️ earplug should be flush with your ear

Noise induced hearing loss is the most common PREVENTABLE hearing loss and the leading cause of hearing loss among young and middle-aged adults.

Protect your hearing!
