The fight to save the M D Whitest Institute continues in Cordele, Georgia.

Cordele Commissioner Chairman Deruso has been struggling to get the commissioners out of an outdated way of thinking.

"Even though we have black bodies sitting in these seats, their mindset...They have been taught by conservatives, republicans...And I will just say mostly white people think that we can't do things like that, but if we look at Warner Robins, Tifton, Perry, they're making investments into the community", says Deriso.

He says the city has enough to do something to keep the doors open and help the Black community.

"When we help him. We help out hundreds. If not thousands of residents...Of people", says Deriso.

Wayne Pharmaceuticals is on the news!

Dr. Wayne conducted a study about the mortality of African-Americans in Cordele and discovered that from 2009 to 2019 the lifespan of an African-American male was 60.2 years old, and African-American females' lifespan was 68 years old.

Dr. Wayne says alarms need to be sounding with the state of health within the black community in Cordele.

"The mortality rates here are just staggering, the disease rate and premature death rate are alarming. I would think in a major city where you would have more people entuned to this would be a crisis and major resources will be mobilized", said Dr. Wayne.

One of Dr. Wayne's goals with saving the facility is to develop the first Rural Health Equity Institute.

Dr. Wayne said his pharmaceutical company will live on even if the doors close, but he wishes to keep the facility to help the community for the better.

"Things need to change, but most importantly to do something about change. To do something about being a part of making a change. I decided to be a part of making a change here", said Dr. Wayne.

That's much less than other races and very sad. So my goal has been to make this community healthier."
