Understanding All Types of SMA

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition that affects muscle strength and movement in different ways, depending on the type:

• Type 1: Symptoms appear early in infancy and are the most severe.
• Type 2: Symptoms start in childhood; mobility varies widely.
• Type 3: Symptoms appear in later childhood or adolescence; many can walk with support.
• Type 4: Adult-onset with milder symptoms.

No matter the type, early diagnosis and intervention can make a big difference in quality of life. Raising awareness helps ensure those affected get the support and resources they need. 💜

✨Testimonial Tuesday ✨

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Vickie Gilbert and the amazing progress she’s made! After facing a rotator cuff tear and surgery, Vickie began her recovery journey with our OT team — Brittany Brewer and Carson Bryan. Over the course of 4 months, she worked hard, stayed consistent, and pushed through every challenge. With encouragement and guidance from her therapists, she regained her mobility and found herself looking forward to each session because it meant steps toward normal movement again.

We are beyond thrilled to welcome Haley Roberts to our ever-growing FYZICAL family! Haley is joining us as an Occupational Therapist at our Americus clinic🤩

Haley is originally from Americus and is passionate about giving back to the place she’s always called home. Haley shared that she’s “excited to be able to serve the community where she grew up and where her children will continue to grow in.” Her deep roots and love for this area make her the perfect fit for our team!

She is married to Brian, and together they have two precious children — Ellie (4) and Noble (2). When they’re not busy with family life, you can find them tending to their grove as first-generation citrus tree farmers 🍊

Haley is also a proud member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and her passion for people shines through in everything she does. We feel incredibly blessed to have her join our mission here in Americus!

How Therapy Makes a Difference for Those with SMA
