How about you? How do you relate to this cycle?

Have you ever felt stuck in this loop?

Anxiety tells you there’s danger when there isn’t. Your brain screams, “Fix this!”—so you avoid, seek reassurance, or do compulsions to feel better. And for a moment… ahh, relief! 😌

But guess what? That short-term comfort actually strengthens anxiety in the long run.

👉 The good news? You can break the cycle!

Facing anxiety without avoiding or doing compulsions teaches your brain that discomfort isn’t dangerous. This is how you build resilience and freedom! 🌱💪

Have you ever caught yourself in this loop?

Be armed with the facts in order to fully support your anxious child.

Be armed with the facts in order to fully support your anxious child.

It takes the body time to calm — not just a few deep breaths.

When a child is overwhelmed, their nervous system can take 20–60 minutes to fully settle after a surge of stress hormones. That’s why calm can’t be rushed. They need safety, patience and connection — not pressure to “get over it.”

Understanding this is at the heart of brain-based parenting. Regulation isn’t instant; it’s built through co-regulation and trust.

This also demonstrates why a child needs longer than 5 minutes out of class after an incident.

There is a full range of calming strategy prompts in our toolkit below.

Happy OCD Awareness Week!

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are distinct conditions that can sometimes overlap in how they impact daily life. While BFRBs involve repetitive self-grooming behaviors like hair pulling or skin picking, OCD is characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety.

This OCD Awareness Week, we join the global effort to dispel myths, reduce stigma, and promote understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder and related conditions, including BFRBs, to help build a more compassionate and informed community.

This is a vital skill that so many of us can learn and refine. When working with parents of anxious kids (even grown ones), we have learned the power of co-regulation and seen it make the most difference in recovery.

When a child is melting down, our instincts can take over — and not always the helpful ones.
We might lecture, rush to fix, or tell them to calm down… but these actually block co-regulation rather than build it.

Let’s talk about what not to do — and what to try instead — so we can truly help a child borrow our calm instead of our chaos.
