A speech sound disorder is the "broad" term we use to say that someone has difficulty with producing speech sounds. Articulation and phonological disorders both impact how a child speaks, but they’re not the same.

While they both impact speech, they are treated very differently therefore it is important to choose a provider who knows the difference.

Being private pay allows myself and families to:

•Inquire and get an appointment in a timely manner
•Use a correct diagnosis and be seen as many times as appropriate (not spreading sessions out through the year since insurance will only pay for a limited amount)
•Ensure that families get the specialized therapy they are looking for. I’m not a “generalist”, I treat two very specific areas of my profession. Not dealing with insurance headaches allows me to take professional development courses and extend my knowledge and hell your child progress!

If you've ever watched Jeopardy, you know that "r" and /s/ are among the most frequently used sounds in the English language! 🗣

Being that we use them in SO many everyday words (for example: run, red, rabbit and sun, socks, soap), it’s incredibly common for children to struggle with them. In fact, these sounds are among the most common sounds I work on in speech therapy!

When a sound shows up this often in conversation, difficulty producing it can really impact how clearly your child is understood — and that can affect confidence, participation, and social interaction.

The good news? 🎉

With targeted, play-based practice and the right strategies, kids can make amazing progress!

🗯️This is a question SLP's get all of the time! I have been asked by parents, my own doctors and random people I have met throughout my life.⁠

The infographic above👆🏼 was made using the norms from the study done by McLeod & Crowe in 2017. They took a number of previous studies/data and combined them all to come up with these norms. By the ages listed above, 90% of children their age were producing these sounds correctly.⁠

While these norms are helpful, it is important to know that if your child is receiving speech and language services in a school setting, they take this information into consideration but they also look at whether the error has an impact on the child's education. If it isn't, they don't often treat it, which is where I come in 😉

If you are worried about your child's speech and language skills, or ability to communicate with others, I can help! My name is Ashley Maturo and I am a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. I have known from a young age that I wanted to be in the helping profession, and what better way then to help children find their voice. Being unable to communicate your wants and needs can be frustrating not only for the child, but also the families/caregivers. I work together with families and professionals to improve your child's ability to communicate effectively and increase their confidence and independence!
