Oh, the food. Many face challenges related to food due to Autism. Autistics can be very particular about what they eat and what they don’t. Holiday foods can be a real challenge. Holidays are supposed to be special, but many times they are out of the ordinary for many households. Strong smells, new textures, & novel tastes can be incredibly overwhelming. This, coupled with the stress of socializing, fancy clothes, & a break in the routine, can lead to a massive meltdown situation. To mitigate this, there are some strategies you can try:
1. First & then- First, taste a new food (never force a person to eat if they can not tolerate it). Then, they can have their highly preferred food.
2. If your family is going somewhere, volunteer to bring something the Autistic person likes. It might be the only thing they eat that day, but at least they know it is safe. Try try to make enough for everyone at the dinner - or at least a respectable amount - this way, it’s not just “### brought their own food” but rather, “### brought the cornbread” or “### brought the pumpkin pie”, which means they/we can feel good about contributing as well as have something good to eat.
3. Try to involve them in the decision-making process for what they want to eat. Ask them what food they want at the special family meal – it’s supposed to be a special occasion, so make it memorable & enjoyable for everyone, & let everyone pick their favorite dish to have at the meal, even if it’s not a “traditional” dish. This can lead to new traditions that everyone in the family can participate in, & enjoy, not just the autistic person.
4. Pick your battles- a holiday meal can consist of chicken nuggets, pizza, or another preferred food. It doesn't make you a bad person or a poor parent.

California fought to protect access to food for its residents. This court decision helps our community to continue buying groceries without interruption.

CalFresh is California’s version of the federal food stamp program (SNAP), providing food/nutrition assistance to many eligible low-income seniors, families and individuals with disabilities. To learn more about the CalFresh program and eligibility requirements, please visit: https://benefitscal.com/.

If you are still experiencing food insecurity, the following resource guide offers information on nearby food banks, pantries and other food resources, eligibility criteria, and contact information. Whether you need emergency groceries or ongoing support, this guide connects you with community resources to help ensure access to healthy, nutritious food for you and your family.

Please note, that the resources we share are not affiliated with the Autism Society Inland Empire. Information is subject to change, so for the most accurate and up-to-date details, be sure to visit the organizer’s website or contact them directly.

🎄 Holiday Tips for Families with Autism 🎄

1. What's Your Focus:
- Do a "Holiday Analysis" and choose one of the four strategies for the holiday time. Decide if this is a time to rest, maintain skills, or practice new skills. Set achievable goals..

2. Use Schedules:
- We all do better when we know what to expect. Use schedules and First/Then visual supports. Whiteboards can be helpful for communicating expectations and schedules.

3. Set "Do's" at Family Events:
- Think about your loved one’s developmental level and stress. Determine important expectations like greeting family, using utensils, and saying thank you. Practice and review these skills Thanksgiving.

4. Plan for Sensory Overload:
- Ensure there is a safe, quiet place for your loved one with Autism to go if they become overloaded, regardless of age. Make a plan and communicate it to them in advance.

Feel free to share your own tips and experiences! 💛

We're proud to announce that Dr. Margaret Bauman, internationally recognized Autism expert and pediatric neurologist, participated in the United Nations Think Tank on Autism & Aging in October.

Dr. Bauman shared her expertise on the medical and behavioral health challenges individuals with Autism face as they age, helping shape global strategies for inclusive healthcare.

And here, at home, in the Inland Empire, next year, Dr. Bauman will lead a groundbreaking initiative for the Autism Society Inland Empire's new project: a Complex Care Medical Clinic. Dr Bauman will share her expertise and experience in helping us identify and build a network of care, including training medical professionals to treat autistic individuals with complex medical and behavioral needs.

This clinic will address the urgent needs of Autistic individuals with complex medical and behavioral challenges — including epilepsy, GI disorders, sleep disturbances, and psychiatric conditions. Dr. Bauman will guide the development of a specialist care network, create plain-language toolkits, and train medical professionals to deliver compassionate, informed care.

We’re honored to have her guiding this transformative work!

Autism Society Inland Empire

Our Mission. The mission of the Autism Society Inland Empire (ASIE) is to improve the lives of all affected by an autism spectrum disorder. We do this by increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding treatment, education, research, support, and advocacy.

Our Philosophy. Our efforts are focused on meaningful participation and self-determination in all aspects of life for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. We promote individual, parental and guardian choice to assure that people on the autism spectrum are treated with dignity and respect. It is our belief that no single program or treatment will benefit all individuals with autism. Furthermore, the recommendation of what is “best” or “most effective” for a person with autism should be determined by those people directly involved – the individual with autism, to the extent possible, and the parents or family members.
