Ovarian cancer is often called a silent threat because its early signs are easy to miss.

“In the early stages of ovarian cancer, women may have few or no symptoms,” says Teresa Longoria, MD, gynecologic oncologist at Scripps Clinic and Prebys Cancer Center. “If there are symptoms, they are usually mild and can be mistaken for other common conditions.”

Lung cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s in a late stage. A low-dose CT scan can detect it early when it’s most treatable and help prevent advanced disease. If you’re 50 or older and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years, ask your doctor about lung cancer screening. Early detection saves lives. Learn more here:

Food poisoning affects millions of people each year but is often preventable. Holiday dishes, especially popular Thanksgiving foods, require careful handling to keep everyone healthy.

“Simple steps like washing your hands and cooking food thoroughly can go a long way in preventing food poisoning. The symptoms — like nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea — can be miserable and in some cases, the illness can become serious or even life-threatening.” says Tina Tran, MD, an internal medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center San Marcos.
