May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a good time to remember that recognizing the signs and acting quickly can save lives. Thankfully, the “BE FAST” acronym makes it easy to remember the signs of a stroke. And if you're looking for more information on stroke swareness, join Sharp Coronado Hospital and the Coronado Fire Department for a free seminar at the Spreckels Center on Thursday, May 15. Earlier today, Sharp Coronado Hospital participated in a county-wide emergency drill at our campus and Tidelands Park. This is a staged response to prepare for a medical evacuation off the island. A helicopter landed at the park to practice airlifting patients in a time of crisis.
Sharp Coronado's chief nursing officer, Marlena Montgomery, says disaster drilling is important for the hospital — and island community — to be prepared, especially if the Coronado Bridge is ever closed.
This 90-minute drill involved multiple agencies, including the City of Coronado, the Coronado Police and Fire Departments, Mercy Air, the Port of San Diego and the San Diego County Medical Operations Center. Thanks to all who participated!

Planning and preparing for an emergency in a time of disaster is an important part of our role as your community hospital. On Thursday, April 17, from 10:30 to noon, Sharp Coronado Hospital will be participating in a County-wide emergency drill that will take place on and around our hospital campus and at nearby Tidelands Park.
This 90-minute drill will take place in coordination with multiple local agencies including, the City of Coronado, the Coronado Police and Fire Departments, Mercy Air, the Port of San Diego and the San Diego County Medical Operations Center.
As part of the drill, you may see and hear helicopter activity on baseball field #4 as well as see fire and police response with their emergency lights flashing. You may also see Sharp Coronado caregivers responding to the park. Please be aware that all of this is a staged response and is preparing us for a medical evacuation off the island as part of our training.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support as we run such emergency drills in preparation for an actual emergency.
