🖤✨ Amplifying Black Voices ✨🖤

Today we created intentional space to listen, reflect, and honor the lived experiences of Black clinicians.

We talked about the cultural differences within Black individuals and families and the importance of providing therapy spaces where clients can show up authentically, without shrinking, code-switching, or carrying the burden of explanation.

We acknowledged the current sociopolitical climate and the impact that shifting policies, public discourse, and cultural tensions continue to have on Black lives. We named how these realities enter the therapy room and shape both the client's and the clinician's experiences.

We emphasized validation, affirmation, and genuine support from leadership. We talked about honoring Black joy alongside pain. We committed to intentional check-ins, cultural presence, and ensuring representation in our therapy rooms.

We also held space for the emotional labor of Black mental health clinicians and the fatigue that can come from continually holding space for others while navigating systemic realities.

This was not about solving everything. It was about listening with intention and committing to continued growth.

Representation matters.
Voice matters.
Connection matters.

🖤 Honoring Black Voices 🖤

As we honor Black History Month, we are proud to celebrate Heather Garcia, MS, LPC, EMDR Trained, Gottman Level I Trained, who has been part of our Distinctive community for five years and continues to lead with authenticity, courage, and style.

Heather is spunky, a true fashionista, and a fierce advocate in our field. She brings courage and clarity to conversations about microaggressions, the cumulative toll of racism, and women’s experiences, creating space for honest dialogue, healing, and growth.

This week, Heather is also presenting on toxic communication and the Four Horsemen, and we could not think of a more powerful way to amplify Black voices as we honor this month.

✨ Distinctive Play Spirit Week Recap ✨

What a week. Distinctive Play Spirit Week was a joyful reminder that play, connection, and creativity are not extras. They are part of how we care for ourselves, each other, and the clients we serve.

From Superhero Day, where we celebrated the everyday courage it takes to show up as helpers, to Silly Socks Day, which invited laughter and lightness into our spaces, each day reflected the heart of our work. Our Happy Places showed how we ground ourselves in what brings calm, joy, and meaning so we can continue to offer that presence to others.

Play is powerful. It builds connection, reduces stress, and reminds us why we love this work.

Thank you to our incredible team for leaning in, having fun, and modeling authenticity and joy.

Here’s to carrying this playful spirit forward, not just this week, but every day. 💛🦸‍♀️🧦🌈

✨ Celebrating V. Fawn Colbourn✨

We are thrilled to celebrate V. Fawn Colbourn’s approval as a Registered Sand Therapist Consultant and Trainer through the World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals. 🎊🎉🎈

This international credential reflects Fawns dedication to ethical practice, clinical depth, and the thoughtful use of expressive modalities in healing work.
Sandtray therapy is a foundational tool within play therapy, making this milestone especially meaningful as we finish out our celebration of Play Therapy Week.

This important work honors the power of symbolism, creativity, and relational safety, offering clients and professionals the space to express and process experiences when words are not enough.

🌿 Looking ahead
This summer, we will be hosting an Open House focused on all things sandtray. Join us to learn more about sandtray therapy, explore training and certification opportunities at Distinctive, and experience how this modality supports play therapy and trauma informed care across the lifespan.

Please join us in congratulating Fawn on this well earned achievement and stay tuned for a summer of learning and connection.

🎉 Spirit Week + Open House Fun at Distinctive Counseling! 🎉

What an incredible week celebrating connection, creativity, and community here at Distinctive Counseling! 💛

We loved opening our doors for our Spirit Week Open House, giving guests a chance to tour our play therapy rooms, explore the spaces where healing and growth happen, and see firsthand how we support children and families through play. Seeing so many smiling faces in our space meant the world to us!

We were also honored to be visited by Terry Kottman Ph.D., RPT-S, LMHC such an inspiring time learning, connecting, and celebrating the heart behind play therapy.

And a huge thank you to Nat from Charcuterie Creations for the absolutely stunning (and delicious!) charcuterie board that kept everyone happily snacking.🧀✨

We’re so grateful for our community and everyone who came out to celebrate with us. Here’s to more moments of connection, learning, and fun together!
