🩺 September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month

PAD affects more than 10 million Americans and is the leading cause of non-traumatic amputations in the U.S. (Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions [SCAI], 2025).

🚨 Despite its prevalence, nearly 70% of people with PAD don’t know they have it, and among Black and Hispanic adults who are disproportionately at risk, 8 in 10 report that no healthcare provider has ever discussed PAD with them (SCAI, 2025).

💔 The stakes are harrowing: In a recent U.S. registry study of more than 22,000 patients, 1-year mortality after major lower-extremity amputation was 25.6% (Li et al., 2025). Other contemporary studies show that mortality rises to ~46–48% after above-knee amputation and ~20–29% after below-knee amputation (Brix et al., 2024). These outcomes highlight why early intervention and limb-preservation strategies are essential.

At PAM Health, our Advanced Wound Care Centers are focused on limb preservation and helping patients maintain independence and quality of life.

We do this through:

🔹 Expert vascular wound care with vascular specialists embedded within our programs;

🔹 Early detection tools such as Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) testing for timely diagnosis; and

🔹 Comprehensive, multidisciplinary care plans combining revascularization, advanced wound therapies, and personalized patient support.

✅ Why this matters: Early identification and treatment don’t just prevent amputations they protect mobility, function, and dignity (American Heart Association [AHA], 2023).

This PAD Awareness Month, let’s amplify awareness. Recognize the signs, leg pain with walking, cramping, or slow-healing wounds and encourage timely evaluation.

Together, we can change the trajectory of PAD, protecting limbs, lives, and futures.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the Jaw

🦷 Improving outcomes in radiation-related jaw injury

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) remains one of the most serious complications of head and neck radiation therapy. Patients often face pain, infection, and complex surgical needs.

Evidence highlights HBOT’s role as a valuable adjunct:

👉A 2025 meta-analysis found HBOT combined with surgical resection or debridement achieved the highest success rates in ORN management (Xu, 2025).

👉Systematic reviews confirm HBOT improves healing in early ORN and enhances peri-operative outcomes, especially in reconstructive surgery (Mazzarella et al., 2022; Murphy et al., 2022).

👉Historical RCT evidence established HBOT’s benefit in reducing post-extraction ORN incidence (Marx et al., 1985).

💡At PAM Health, we are expanding HBOT services to strengthen multidisciplinary care pathways for patients facing radiation-related jaw complications, supporting both healing and surgical success.

Radiation Cystitis (Pelvic Survivorship)

💡 Addressing radiation-related bladder injury with evidence-based care

Radiation therapy to the pelvis can lead to radiation-induced cystitis, often presenting with hematuria, pain, and urinary dysfunction. These complications significantly impact survivorship and quality of life.

Evidence demonstrates HBOT’s effectiveness:

👉The RICH-ART randomized controlled trial showed clinically meaningful improvement in urinary symptoms, with benefits sustained at 5 years (Bolling et al., 2019; 2025).

👉A 2024 meta-analysis reported 90% of patients improved symptoms, with 55% achieving complete hematuria remission (Yang et al., 2024).

💡At PAM Health, we are expanding HBOT access to better support patients experiencing radiation-related bladder injury, providing an evidence-based pathway to recovery.

🌟 Pulmonary Rehab Success Story 🌟

Meet Ms. Elnora Lopez 💙

When Ms. Lopez began our Pulmonary Rehab Program (5/16–8/15/2025), her goals were simple but powerful: to breathe easier and stand stronger.

✨ Before PR:
▫️ Walked 506 ft with a cane at a slow pace
▫️ Needed frequent 1-min rest breaks
▫️ Lowest O₂ sat: 93%
▫️ Moderate shortness of breath

✨ Today:
▫️ Walked 886 ft with her cane at a moderate pace
▫️ Only needed 1 short 30-sec rest break
▫️ Maintained O₂ sat of 93% on room air
▫️ Shortness of breath reduced to very mild

💪 With improved breathing techniques, energy, and stability, Ms. Lopez is now pulling weeds, watering plants, moving furniture, and even sweeping & mopping again!

And the best part? She’s preparing for an exciting trip with her son to Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, and Crazy Horse Mountain next week! 🗻✈️

👏 We are so proud of her progress and can’t wait to see all she continues to accomplish!

Women’s Health & Survivorship – HBOT + Pelvic Floor Therapy

🌸 Women’s Health & Survivorship: Healing radiation-related complications

Radiation therapy for gynecologic cancers is lifesaving, but it can also leave women with lasting complications such as pain, ulceration, bleeding, scarring, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Evidence supports advanced treatment options:

👉79% of women improved in ulceration, pain, and sexual health after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) (Möring et al., 2025).

👉Systematic reviews confirm HBOT enhances healing of vaginal/vulvar wounds and improves survivorship outcomes (Geldof et al., 2022).

👉When combined with specialized pelvic floor rehabilitation, outcomes extend to improved function, intimacy, and quality of life.

💡 At PAM Health we are expanding access to HBOT and pelvic floor therapy to better support women facing radiation-related late tissue injury, offering a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to recovery.

✨ Survivorship isn’t just about years lived, it’s about the quality of life lived.

✨ Success Story Spotlight ✨
Meet Mr. Castillo 💪🚴‍♂️

From May 8th to August 15th, 2025, Mr. Castillo committed to our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program with one clear goal—build endurance and get back to cycling.

When he began, even light activity required 3–5L of oxygen. His initial evaluation showed he could walk 890 ft at a moderate pace with mild shortness of breath, and his lowest oxygen saturation was 85% on room air.

Fast forward to today:
✅ 1,288 ft walked at a moderate pace
✅ No shortness of breath
✅ Oxygen saturation up to 91% on room air

While he continues to use oxygen with exercise, his endurance has grown tremendously. Now, he’s back on his bike, riding with his grandson, and using breathing techniques learned in the program to enjoy life again.

👏 Huge thanks to Danelle, RT, for her guidance and support, and to the PAM Health team for making a difference every step of the way!

Thank you for your great Google review!

🌟 Success Story Spotlight 🌟

When our patient first joined the program, his goals were simple but powerful — build endurance, get back to doing things around the house, and enjoy his beloved man cave again.

After an extended hospital stay due to acute respiratory failure with hypoxia, shortness of breath on exertion, and interstitial pneumonitis, he was bed-ridden and weighed just 117 lbs. On his first 6-Minute Walk Test, he covered 575 ft at a slow pace, with oxygen saturation dropping to 89% on room air. He needed a rest break, often feeling lightheaded and short of breath.

💪 Fast forward to today — he’s now walking 891 ft with no rest breaks and a lowest oxygen saturation of 91% on room air. His weight has increased to 129 lbs, and he reports little to no shortness of breath!

But the real victory? He’s back to doing yard work, relaxing in his man cave, traveling, and enjoying outings with his wife, family, and friends. His loved ones have all noticed the incredible difference.

🎉 We are so proud of his progress, determination, and the new quality of life he’s worked so hard to achieve!

Thank you for the super kind review! We appreciate you!
