Hi everyone! I'm Britney, a 3rd year OT student at Samuel Merritt University. Working with the Little Hands families has been such a fun and rewarding experience-it truly confirmed my passion for pediatric OT and all the amazing opportunities to help kids grow and thrive! Outside of OT I love being outdoors and spending time with friends and family! πŸ˜Šβ˜€οΈ

Related services = game changers. ✨
Think: assistive tech, therapy, nursing, vision services, 1:1 aides & more β€” all helping students meet IEP goals and thrive alongside peers. πŸ’ͺ

But… how do you know what your child really needs?
What should the school be providing?
Can you ask for parent training?
And what if they say no? 😬

Tom Horton is walking 500 miles across the Camino de Santiago to raise awareness and support for the FOXG1 gene therapy missionβ€”one step at a time, one mile closer to hope.

Now, we’re incredibly grateful to share that David Cush has made a generous gift of $25,000 to dedicate one mile to 250 FOXG1 children. His heartfelt goal? To reach children who may not yet have a mileβ€”making sure every family feels seen, included, and supported.

πŸ’œ Want to dedicate one of these special miles to your child or a FOXG1 warrior you love?

The Walk for Apraxia is a chance to come together and support our Apraxia Stars. Read about the experience of Rafael-Hernandez family, who have been an integral part of our Little Hands community for years:

"The 2023 Walk for Apraxia was our family's first walk. Our Apraxia Star, Camila, was celebrated with a certificate, medal and goodie bag! It felt great to be in community with professionals that support our kiddos everyday, and with other families that relate to this journey. We are able to come together to celebrate our Apraxia Stars that work so hard throughout the year to improve themselves.

We walk each year for our Apraxia Star Camila Rafael-Hernandez! Camila was first diagnosed with a speech delay at 2 years old, and later on, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). As a first-time parent, I had never heard of a speech delay or what CAS was. I felt it was necessary to get involved in spreading awareness about CAS and educating families about how to find support and resources. I was invited to attend the July 2023 Apraxia Kids National Conference in Texas as a scholarship recipient. It was an amazing opportunity to network with professionals and families across the nation. I was able to learn more about the Apraxia Walk in SF and was so excited that an event would be occurring near me! Our family is now committed to participate each year because of the great work that Apraxia Kids does yearly to support our kids!

I encourage families, friends, neighbors, speech pathologists and other professionals to join the 2025 Walk for Apraxia this year! Little Hands does an amazing job each year to celebrate our Apraxia Stars who work everyday on bettering themselves - they deserve this! Apraxia Kids cares about our kids and makes sure the funds raised go to support our kids with anything ranging from AAC devices, resources for families, and scholarships for parents/guardians to attend their yearly national conference! Register for the 2025 Walk for Apraxia and don’t miss out!"

We had a blast learning from our friend Dr. Jeremy Shumaker, Pediatric and Developmental Optometrist at Rising Star Optometry! Dr. Shumaker gave our therapists great insight into common pediatric vision issues and how to identify them in an OT setting. He also taught us how to asses convergence, saccades, and common ocular reflexes (pictured: our team assessing each other!). Thank you Dr. Shumaker for sharing your abundant knowledge with us! πŸ‘πŸ§ πŸ‘“

We are so grateful to have Naomi as part of our OT team this summer! Read a little bit about Naomi below:

Hello! My name is Naomi and I’m a third year OT student in the doctorate program at Dominican University of California 🐧 I am finishing up the last few weeks of my level two fieldwork here at Little Hands, and have fallen in love with the world of pediatric OT. I love that this field incorporates fun and creative play-based strategies to make a real difference in the lives of children and their families. Outside of school, I love painting, spending time with family, and watching movies (preferably Disney or Marvel!)

That’s a wrap on Courageous Kids, led by our wonderful OT Michelle! We are so proud of these brave kiddos who spent the week practicing courageous talking, moving, and playing. πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸ‘«πŸŽ¨πŸ©΅ Through sensory-motor & social-bravery based activities like Headbandz & personalized calm down bags, these amazing kiddos faced their fears, built confidence, and took big steps in communicating more freely in social situations. Go Courageous Kids, Go! πŸš€
