❗Pelvic floor therapy is not only for women who have had vaginal births! Regardless of delivery method, your pelvic floor muscles are stretched and weakened during pregnancy. One of the abdominal muscles that works directly with the pelvic floor is cut into, which often leads to long-term pelvic floor dysfunction.

A c-section should be treated like any other major surgery. Other major surgeries require multiple follow up visits with physicians for incision care, infection control, and other healing purposes, as well as a referral for physical or occupational therapy to regain strength and control of the muscles operated on.

With a c-section, you are typically offered 1-2 follow up visits in which you are not told how to manage your scar, the risks of scar tissue development, and therapy is not typically recommended.

Pelvic floor therapy should be the standard of care after a c-section!

👉C-sections currently make up about 32% of all births in the United States. This number is two to three times greater than the 10-15% recommended by the World Health Organization.

It is so important for women to learn how to advocate for themselves during labor and delivery. A c-section is not always medically necessary and can still lead to pelvic floor dysfunction!

✨Do your research prior to delivery about what signs and symptoms and diagnoses REQUIRE a c-section vs. when a provider PREFERS to perform a c-section.

✨Having a pelvic floor therapist who is versed in labor and delivery prep can help prepare you for a vaginal birth to avoid a c-section if not medically warranted.

✨A doula can also help to advocate for you during the labor and delivery process.

If you are pregnant, you should see Dr. Riana, a pelvic floor therapist, BEFORE giving birth!

Why?

✨Dr. Riana will teach you how to improve pelvic positioning for better labor and delivery outcomes. Proper pelvic positioning will help the baby move down through the birth canal and then out.

✨Dr. Riana will guide you through specific exercises, stretches, and techniques with the aim of decreasing pelvic floor tension, which may decrease the length of the second stage of labor and reduce your risk of tearing.

✨Dr. Riana will listen to you - your worries and concerns, your birth goals, and all the questions you have. She will encourage you, educate you, and provide you with the resources you need to feel confident and empowered for labor and delivery.

❗It is so important to get familiar with your body. A couple times a month, place a mirror between your legs and use clean fingers to inspect your female body parts. Once you know what "normal" looks like for you, you will have a much better idea when something is wrong and be able to get help from a medical provider right away!

❗The more familiar we can become with our bodies, the more comfortable we can feel knowing we are in charge of our health, and the better we are able to advocate for ourselves when being seen by a medical provider.

C-sections are often misunderstood when it comes to pelvic floor health—and this is one of the biggest myths we hear 👇

Just because you didn’t have a vaginal delivery doesn’t mean your pelvic floor wasn’t impacted. Pregnancy alone places significant demand on these muscles, and a C-section adds another layer of change to how your core and body function together.

The truth? Your scar, your breathing patterns, and how your body manages pressure all play a role in your recovery.

If you’ve been dealing with leaking, heaviness, or discomfort and thought “this shouldn’t be happening to me”—you’re not alone, and there is help 🤍

Pelvic floor therapy can guide you back to feeling strong, supported, and confident in your body again.

April is C-Section Awareness Month—a time to recognize, support, and educate around cesarean births and recovery. 💛

C-sections are often life-saving and incredibly important, yet many people underestimate what the body goes through during and after surgery. Healing isn’t just about the incision—it involves your core, pelvic floor, mobility, and overall well-being.

Many moms are told to “take it easy,” but aren’t always given the tools or guidance to truly recover. That’s where education and support make all the difference. Understanding how to care for your body, manage scar tissue, and safely rebuild strength can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your postpartum journey.

No matter how your baby entered the world, your experience is valid—and your healing deserves time, attention, and care.
