In 2014 she completed an apprenticeship of supervised teaching from STOTT PILATES ® Instructor Trainers in the Train to Teach program at Pacific NW Pilates in Portland, OR and continues to train and study with her mentors there. Outside of her busy life as a physical therapist, Sara dances with Downtown Dance in Corvallis, knits for various causes, volunteers for her high school alma mater dance program, walks, reads, hikes, snowboards, and throws in a bit of yoga whenever she can.

STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Lindsay and Moira
Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent over two decades refining the acclaimed STOTT PILATES method of exercise. The refined method resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation—making it one of the safest and most effective methods available. STOTT PILATES is recognized as The Professional’s Choice™ by studios, fitness facilities, fitness professionals and the consumer
market worldwide.

🧠 Empower your patients to alleviate pain utilizing their greatest tool - the mind.

❓How does mindfulness alleviate pain? This is a common question people often ask their physical therapist.

✔️ This is a valid question because the cause of pain can be diverse.

🫥 One person's pain could be due to psychosocial factors such as depression or anxiety that sensitize the nervous system. Mindfulness improves mental health as well as nervous system regulation providing significant pain relief.

🥱 It could from be years of poor sleep habits. We know that poor sleep impacts pain sensitivity and when sleep is restored pain is reduced.

🧠 When practitioners understand how mindfulness trains the brain they are more likely to share it with their patients.

🔬Research shows that mindfulness can improve health outcomes in areas like physical function, injury prevention, pain management, immune function, and non-communicable diseases—all of which are commonly seen in PT practice.

A great resource!

Have you thought about trying chronic pain coaching?
Wondering what I can do for you that's different?

That's a great question. Here are some of the ways I have helped people.

🏥 I can help you figure out your next step medically and how to talk to your medical professional about it.

🔥 I can help you develop a unique pacing and flare plan so you can live your life more while reducing your flare-ups!

🏋️‍♀️ 🏊‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️ I can help you design a step-by-step program to get back to activities you value - from sitting for lunch with a friend to getting back to CrossFit!

❤️🧠 We can explore you and your pain journey and find the pieces that are keeping you stuck and unable to move forward in your journey and make a plan and use tools to get you unstuck.

What I don't do...

I won't prescribe exercises like a PT.
Movement is OFTEN part of coaching, but not always and we build a plan together, coaching isn't physical Therapy.

I don't diagnose you with anything - mental or physical.
I can help you understand reports, the next steps, and if you have crossed all your t's and dotted your i's.

I won't make you wait until the next appointment to ask me questions or share things with me!
When start coaching, we use messenger, as much as you need. As your coach, I want you to know I am there and we can talk about the way our plan is working and all the odds and ends that are REAL life that comes up in between.

Ready to start?
Reply START in the comments and I'll be in touch via messenger very soon.

Have you considered that by continuing to search for more and more specific answers for your pain that you are actually creating more suffering for yourself?

I got really mad when I was asked this. I mean REALLY mad.

Couldn't people see I just wanted to know what was wrong so I could fix it?

What if the answer to why you continue to have pain is because your nervous system is on high alert - in part- because of your CONSTANT focus on finding an answer.

I have answers for you when you are ready. I'm always ready to talk.

Red Flag. A few days ago I posted about my goals, hopes, and some thoughts about the consumption, application, and sharing of information here as professionals (see Stumbling Forward-2021).

I realize that navigating all the information in social media is a minefield for individuals-who do you trust? Teasing that out is tricky, but I think this might be at least a place to start. If someone is neither a health pro or a running/exercise/kinesiology/fitness pro, that’s a red flag. Having a baby, does not qualify you to give health or fitness advice to other women having babies. Period. This includes your favorite celebrity.

Here are a few other things to watch for:

Use of the words never or always or everyone or no one (Ex: Never do xyz exercise)
Fear based edicts (Ex: Check it before you wreck it)
Promises of quick fixes
Tips without context (Ex: These 6 exercise will help you recover from x)
Certifications and branding from non-regulated professional organizations

What are some other ideas you’ve offered to help women navigate?
