Reflecting on this beautiful birth that I was privileged to be a part of last year. This first time mama entered labor open minded and ready for guidance, strong and sure of her ability to manage whatever came her way. Sometimes in birth we like to say that there’s always a little magic dust and you never know exactly where it’s going to fall and give you a little surprise.

In this case the surprise was that as she walked through the gates of birth, her body opened and became ready for her baby and every stage looked just as she’d envisioned. Her sweet partner held her as she journeyed, her mama watched her daughter become a mama and her midwife guided her as she roared her baby into the world. Everyone witnessing knew we were witnessing a powerful mother being born.

Exciting things brewing for my family! At almost 23 weeks pregnant with the third addition to our family I’m starting to make preparations for my own birth and postpartum 🥰
I’ve been busy with births and my schedule is full for birth and postpartum work until my birth. I’ll be taking a while before I start regularly attending births again so I can stay with my new sweet babe 💕 However… if you’re planning a homebirth some time in 2025 and are interested in doula support I’d love to hear from you! I would love to attend a birth or two with baby in tow ✨

When I gave birth to my oldest I had no idea the breastfeeding ride we were about to go on. They latched right away, everyone told us we were doing great, but several days later they were still losing weight. I started casually pumping a few times a day, and finger feeding a few ounces of pumped milk as our supportive midwives visited our home every couple of days and encouraged us.

I vividly remember sobbing in the shower one day after a weight check where my 1.5 week old baby had lost weight yet again. I was terrified they were sick, terrified something was wrong that we didn’t know about, terrified.

By week 3 we had started taking supplementing very seriously. I got on an intensive triple feeding regiment, where I would power pump for an hour, feed my baby with a sns taped to my breast for 30 minutes, and then hold them while they slept for half an hour before beginning again. It went on like that for weeks and weeks. It was brutal and felt hopeless at times, and then, after researching and trying everything I could think of, 10 weeks after birth, we met Becky.

Becky has kind, magical fingers. She is intuitive and gentle, and after holding my baby and doing craniosacral therapy on them for 45 minutes while we chatted (outside wearing masks, remember June 2020??) my darling baby who had broken my heart wide open with love, was nursing.

It truly felt like a miracle. We were so lucky that we found Becky, and lucky that me and my children are extremely disposed to CST working very well for us. I recommend CST with Becky for every new baby that I meet, and this is an amazing gift she’s giving to make it more accessible.

This is an incredible opportunity that is being offered in Corvallis . Becky Bricker is an incredible person, craniosacral therapist, and doula.

TW: miscarriage

In October, at the 12 week scan for my pregnancy I found out that my baby hadn’t grown in the last four weeks and didn’t have a heartbeat. It was devastating, shocking, and led to three months of interventions trying to complete the miscarriage.
I was deeply lucky that my partner has a job where he was easily able to take the paid family time off that Oregon offers so I was cared for, and so were our children for the few days surrounding finding out about the miscarriage.

Something we struggle with as a society is treating a person who’s experiencing a miscarriage like they’re postpartum. Your hormones are all over the place, you’re grieving, and your body and mind need to heal. This can be an ideal time to hire a postpartum doula. Maybe a friend or family member will pay for a few hours of one for you as a gift.

Having someone cook you a bone broth stew as you curl up in bed in your blankets, nourish you, sit with you, and maybe come up with a little ritual you can do for yourself and your baby can help you feel cared for and seen.

TW: premature birth (happy ending)

When I unexpectedly went into labor at 34 weeks with my second baby, I was sure he would be coming home with me a few days later. I went to the hospital feeling a little nervous but mostly excited to meet the sweet life I’d been growing for 8 months.

When he was pulled from my arms after being born to be given breathing support I had never felt anything more deeply wrong. Thankfully I had my doula by my side as I reached for the tiny darling that had lived his whole life inside me until that moment.

The next 72 hours were a blur as I tried to care for my postpartum body and my sweet babe. We navigated a system that didn’t care that I felt dizzy after standing for ten minutes, much less the hours that I had been. Didn’t care that I hadn’t eaten since before I went into labor. I tried to find my voice as lab techs drawing blood from his minuscule veins berated me for not being calmer, and judged me for not being there the first time his blood had been drawn. I hadn’t been told about the previous blood draw, and had been gone from him for 23 minutes while I finally ate, 5 hours after giving birth.

We were finally transferred to the NICU, which, after a traumatic transfer, was a relief. The peace, relative comfort, and clear competency of the staff was an enormous shift from what we had experienced so far.

Over the next few days I fell into a routine, gained confidence, knew more about my baby’s care than most of the staff, and stood up for what I wanted for my child. We were deeply lucky that there wasn’t anything too seriously wrong, and two weeks later we got to go home.

In my first 24 hours in the NICU I kept wishing that a doula for the NICU existed. To guide me, tell me that the social worker was going to find me a place to sleep that night, to tell someone to restock the pads in the bathroom, to get me a keycard for the doors, to find me food.

I decided I wanted to be that person for someone else. I am a birth, postpartum and NICU doula and I am here for you if that becomes part of your story.

At the Community Doula Program, we aim to increase favorable perinatal outcomes in our communities by providing culturally-matched care to our families, as well as being a Perinatal Safe Zone amplifier through Jennie Joseph's National Perinatal Task Force ().

NPTF amplifiers are individuals or groups taking action in their community to raise consciousness via education and activism to amplify the vision of birthing a just and loving world. Often it’s simply providing a listening ear, being a true supporter who isn’t going to judge and who genuinely has the entire family's best interests at heart. We can learn more about the true barriers in perinatal care from the people who are experiencing them.
