Congratulations to this year’s LPI Summer Research Scholars! Thanks to generous donors, these five awardees are receiving financial support towards their work with LPI faculty mentors this summer.

The projects delve into a range of promising avenues for healthy aging and disease prevention, such as:

🔎 novel combination treatments for breast cancers
🔎 the role of a novel vitamin D derivative and bioactive natural product(s) in mitigating skin damage from ultraviolet radiation
🔎 investigations into glial cell physiology to better understand brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases
🔎 determining the proteome landscape of therapy-induced senescence in breast cancer subtypes to support the development of senotherapeutics

We look forward to sharing their progress later this summer!

Congratulations to Jan Frederik Stevens, the LPI’s new Ava Helen Pauling Chair!

Dr. Stevens was among several OSU faculty members recognized by the Oregon State University Foundation at its annual Faculty Excellence Dinner on May 7.

He is currently LPI’s Associate Director of Research and a professor in the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy. He joined the Institute in 2002.

Dr. Stevens’ research focuses on the chemistry, biology, and pharmacology of natural products from plants. He is known for leading pioneering research on xanthohumol, a natural product from the female flowers of the hops plant.

The Stevens lab has discovered that xanthohumol exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anti-hyperglycemic effects in animal models of metabolic syndrome. Dr. Stevens brought xanthohumol to clinical trials for testing its safety and efficacy in patients suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The Ava Helen Pauling Chair position was named in honor of Dr. Linus Pauling’s wife because of her great importance to him, his career, and their work opposing nuclear testing and promoting world peace.

We did it! Because of so many of you, the Linus Pauling Institute exceeded its goal during yesterday’s Dam Proud Day fundraising event. We received 121 donations and raised over $90,000!

This success helps us in several important ways, raising funds for our research, student fellowships and support, and the Micronutrient Information Center.

Also, a huge thank you goes to our many challenge donors who helped inspire so many others to give and support the LPI!

Ever been overwhelmed by the endless media stream of nutrition and health advice that you aren’t sure you can trust?

The Micronutrient Information Center (MIC) is the LPI's answer to this problem.

The MIC is a free, online hub for evidence-based information about the roles of nutrients and other dietary factors in health and disease.

Your gift to the MIC today will help us expand this resource at a time when health misinformation is growing.

We need 50 more gifts of ANY amount to reach our goal today!

As part of today’s online event, we’ve released a new guide to help you choose supplements. In collaboration with OSU Extension, "Choosing Supplements Wisely" is part of our Top 10 Micronutrients for Aging Well project. *Check it out at lpi.pub/Top10Project*

One reason we care so much about today’s fundraising drive is that it will support graduate students like Kristen Snitchler.

Thanks in part to the Simone & Balz Frei Graduate Fellowship Fund, Kristen is deepening her research into Alzheimer’s disease and the role the amyloid beta peptide plays in its progression.

Her passion for research grew out of her own family’s health challenges. “My mother suffered from a chronic illness as an adult, and her experience left me with a deep sense of empathy and a desire to understand the mechanisms underlying chronic illness,” she said.

As Kristen also watched her grandmother battle dementia and her father fight esophageal cancer, she realized the profound importance of healthspan rather than just lifespan.

Now, Kristen is a third-year PhD student in the Oregon State University Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics program. With her thesis advisor, LPI affiliate faculty member Dr. Nate Mortimer, she is using a Drosophila (fly) model in her Alzheimer’s research.

Help us reach today's goal and support tomorrow's leaders in healthy aging research! https://www.damproudday.org/organizations/linus-pauling-institute
