Midvalley Doula Network

Midvalley Doula Network www.midvalleydoulas.net What is a doula? A doula is hired by the birthing couple, and works for them. How can a doula help?

A doula is an experienced, trained woman who provides physical, emotional, spiritual and informed choice support before, during and after childbirth. Doulas work with obstetricians and with midwives, in hospitals and at home births. Studies show that women attended by a doula during birth have shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, fewer cesareans and healthier babies. Recent evidence also suggests that the labor support provided by doulas enhances women’s satisfaction with their birth experiences and confidence with their new babies. With doula support, fathers tend to stay more engaged with their partners, during and after labor. Birth doulas are knowledgeable about pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum experience. We provide continuous support to the birthing couple before, during and in the first few weeks after childbirth. We are advocates for the birthing couple's wishes. Postpartum doulas go into the home to help mothers and their newborn babies. We help families create a sustainable environment of support.

"One of the most important things to remember is that a birth plan should be created from a place of knowledge, not just by haphazardly picking options from a checklist. Take the time to learn about each choice—whether it’s pain relief methods, monitoring preferences, or newborn procedures."

Did you know that PSI offers a FREE postpartum planning class for 2nd and 3rd trimester expectant parents? All expectant parents are welcome: moms, birthing people, non-gestational parents, partners, couples, and single parents. If you are expecting a baby soon, we welcome you to join us.

We will focus on the parents’ mental health and emotional well-being during the postpartum period. The class will include education, interactive discussion, reviewing our postpartum plan, filling out sections of the plan, and resource building. This class is not focused on how to care for baby. This class is about your emotional and mental wellbeing as it pertains to: managing expectations, self nourishment, creating a support network, and understanding the many different perinatal mood challenges that can occur.

Have you wondered if you can do anything to turn your OP baby?

Now we do know that OP position is NORMAL. However many people would like to help encourage their little one in to a different position before or during birth. Think of it as helping the body along with what it will do anyway!

Here are 6 tips to try to encourage your little one to turn:

1. CORRECT YOUR POSTURE: Being in a slouching position can encourage your baby to adopt an OP position. Remembering to pull your shoulders back and maintain a neutral spine and pelvis will help. Let’s be honest, we can’t do this 24/7 but try to make small improvements.
2. TRY FORWARD LEANING/INVERSIONS: This can create space for your baby to rotate and create balance in the pelvis.
3. USE A BIRTH BALL: Prenatal use can promote good posture and a comfortable sitting position. It is also perfect to lean over on to for a forward leaning position.
4. LUNGE: Lunging in labour can increase the space in the mid pelvis to allow room for baby to do the necessary rotations. Try a split stance with a side ways movement! They are so great to do during contractions too.
5. KEEP ACTIVE: This goes for pregnancy too, not just labour. Exercise keeps us mobile and allows us to adapt to our changing bodies. It also can help prevent the sedentary lifestyle that is thought to add to the occurrence of an OP position.
6. GET A PEANUT BALL: Now these are most commonly used in labour but get one at home and use it there too! Peanut balls are magic. They encourage rotation of baby and often we see labour progress really well. If you are planning an epidural this will be your best friend! This is how you mobilise with an epidural!

These tips are by no means guaranteed to work but definitely give them a try. We have so many tools to optimise the positioning of baby, these barely scratch the surface! Remember that if you have high blood pressure then inversions are not advisable. Always seek advice from a midwife/physiotherapist when trying these tips.
