Greetings

National take a hike day
It is raining today in Oregon, all day.
Take high, purposeful, calorie-burning, hiking steps as you launch from your commuter, metal-like, noble, 20 year old, trusty steed that will patiently wait for you as your return in the wet dark
Carrying your fantastic satchel of lunch , of leftovers lovingly created, nutritious gourmets, that will take on better flavor the second day after…
(yeah, whatever- hospital cafeteria, again I hope they have…) without dropping it as you juggle your keys, your cell phone… #$% # once again gravity wins.

A little baklava - crunch, flaky, walnuts and honey
The last day before the Oregon shutdown

Homemade bread day
Fitting.

Quick
Its almost 8.
Smile.
The show must go on.

Ryan

The Falling Maple Leaf

Out I am in November
A little cold in the ears as I begin
As I ride a bike
On the Willamette River Trail Path

Otherwise it is still t-shirt weather
Racing through the piles of leaves
Resurrected for a second, tossing once more time into the air
Joyful like the month of June

I am laughing inside
I am not alone
I let the others get ahead
I have no reason to worry

On my left are the homeless tents
On my right is a tree filled park
Some are running on the leaf covered path
With masks on, they furrow their eyes and look away

Not sure what we are worried about today
The scientist in me has not seen a study
I think about the operating room
The air is no different; it is pump in from out there or here

Fresh air or sometimes we smell the delivery truck
It is not purified, sorry no such luck
We wash our hands before putting on a surgery gown
The water is just from the tap in large basins

Fear is what we are selling
Sure this virus kills
My brother has had it
He works in a hospital

My sister’s father-in-law
Healthy, but over 70, he caught it
He is now cold and in the ground
There is a pattern but a bit capricious

Sometimes is death
Is not deserved, not earned
The price of life
Happy for a day, then under the knife

We are riding around the Willamette river
That I know better in the summer
I see its splashing waves, I smile knowingly
Inviting me but I know better

I put on my winter cap under my helmet over my ears
My ears are hurting from the cold and the self-generated bike -wind
Makes me think of my wife who tells me about her ear sensitivity
Better, I catch up again

All is happy, I am enjoying
This Oregon November
The colors all around
bright yellows, oranges, a few reds
Brown leaves on the floor crunching is the sound…

-Biff! A yellowed Oregon big-leaf maple leaf
Hits me squarely on my left cheek.
A little sting. Stuns me. I am a little shocked.
You’re not in New England anymore

Did you forget that our leaves are bigger?
With a little wind and rain
They are a force to be reckoned with
I reflect: Life can be short and unpredictable

You never know what may come up and
Hit you in the face or take away your breath
And take away your invincibility
Nature winks, with full culpability

Getting ready at home
we made it to the dump intact. The forestry guys kept coming by to take pictures. As I dragged at 5 mph for the last 2 miles. I told the people at the dump that I came from the Applicians. It was a therapeutic dump. My favorite kind.

not as uncommon as you would think

There are days when I don’t want to get out of bed. That’s just the truth. And that’s why I wrote this.

I love fall. Here is a poem I wrote last fall->

Fall Leaves

Across the road they seem to follow me
A hop, a jump in the gentle breeze
These things they fall out of trees

They tumble and toss in the air as a car whizzes past
I see a few with a gasp, hit my windshield
That very day as we near the end of October

My heart within me smolders
The maple leaves they crawl and scurry ‘cross the road
To fields and fens I have never known

They wink and say to me
“Leaping frog, come and play
Come before my sail is flat

And I am squished and color flat
My color is faded and dulled,
soon forgotten, now that I have fall’n
In a tomb-shaped pile I await the grinding machine

That comes along to clear the streets
For I, like you, will become less neat
The rising generation wants to take the stage

I bow down, I have no rage
I remember once years before
I too, thought about the score

I thought the old smelled, and dotty were some
Like little children they have become
In little homes and boxes

Now gathered in
Not visited but a few to this day
As the gray hairs pass away

On the bare trees a few hang on
To remain upon the tree forlorn
A flag to those very few, that in the spring will be reborn

I glide right through with my bike
And kick up leaves with delight
I hope someone will care for me

Not just take what’s in the bank
But will cherish me with good intent
I have energy I am not spent

I smile; I am halfway to a hundred
I have seen the past and what is in front of me
I have no dread, I can see

These are the “golden years” ahead
Some are old and frail and sad you see
I hope that won’t be me

Some are happy and content with every passing, failing part
That was so good, so fresh from the start
My mind I hope it endures to the end

So that love, not paranoia enters in
To love them all and not relent
Leaves are never here to stay

One by one they fall away
For color soon drains away
The greens, reds, yellows, and oranges

I will hope I am not toothless, sucking lozenges
My gray hair to wipe away
A tear in my eye

As I see my grandchildren walking by
I hope to give them hope that they too can cope
And make it back to the straight and narrow path

To hold to the rod of iron within their grasp
For love is love ‘tis true
I have hurt a few

I did not mean what was said, I was screaming inside my head
Now this is out, I am alive, aware
I did not want to give you a scare

Leaves we cannot put back
There is no going back
I wish I could take them back

Just know that you are loved
Regardless of what you choose to do
Love unfettered, unchained

For children, we all do remain
