While waiting for my mint plant to grow a bit, I decided to experiment with using dried botanicals - mint in this case - to make some peppermint essential oil. Also, because I neglected to put the ice cone in the freezer, I decided to try an "ice hack."
The peppermint oil recipe I used consisted of about 2 cups of dried mint. To refresh the mint and make it more likely to yield oil, I added 1 cup of water to the dried mixture in the EssenEx® container, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and stirred well.
The ice hack I mentioned involved weaving some unflavored dental floss (you could also use kitchen twine) at the bottom of the cone-shaped heat shield to form a platform on which to place the ice. I used commercial "double frozen" ice, which I often buy for home use.
Six minutes in the microwave and 15 minutes of cooling, and I removed the lid from the EssenEx® to discover one of the most rich, minty aromas. Decanting the top third of the beaker liquid into the flask, stoppering, and agitating, I was not able to detect any oil layer on top. However, the hydrosol is wonderful! Perfect to use in my kitchen as a natural insect deterrent (oh those ants!!).
I'll consult with my extraction experts and report back with the next experiment and my adjustments. Perhaps I didn't use as much dried mint as needed. We shall see! In any case, it was a successful run, producing some lovely hydrosol!
