Friends: It is with sadness that OilExTech, LLC is suspending operations pending either an investor or buyer comes forward. As all of you that own our products know, they should run just fine without any supplies from us, and we hope you enjoy them for years to come. See the web site www.oilextech.com for more detail. Thanks again for going on this delightful journey with us. We only wish we could have sales at a level that would allow us to stay operational and pay all the bills! Have you heard of hydrosols? Whether you have or not, you have likely experienced them in a skin product or a refreshing drink. Hydrosols are 100% water-based and can be a gentler route to getting the benefits of plant extracts. For example, a lavender hydrosol can be a refreshing face tonic or an aromatic addition to a bath.

While waiting for my mint plant to grow a bit, I decided to experiment with using dried botanicals - mint in this case - to make some peppermint essential oil. Also, because I neglected to put the ice cone in the freezer, I decided to try an "ice hack."

The peppermint oil recipe I used consisted of about 2 cups of dried mint. To refresh the mint and make it more likely to yield oil, I added 1 cup of water to the dried mixture in the EssenEx® container, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and stirred well.

The ice hack I mentioned involved weaving some unflavored dental floss (you could also use kitchen twine) at the bottom of the cone-shaped heat shield to form a platform on which to place the ice. I used commercial "double frozen" ice, which I often buy for home use.

Six minutes in the microwave and 15 minutes of cooling, and I removed the lid from the EssenEx® to discover one of the most rich, minty aromas. Decanting the top third of the beaker liquid into the flask, stoppering, and agitating, I was not able to detect any oil layer on top. However, the hydrosol is wonderful! Perfect to use in my kitchen as a natural insect deterrent (oh those ants!!).

I'll consult with my extraction experts and report back with the next experiment and my adjustments. Perhaps I didn't use as much dried mint as needed. We shall see! In any case, it was a successful run, producing some lovely hydrosol!

My peppermint plant is growing more slowly than my desire to make some peppermint oil, so I decided it was time to get creative! I visited the Asian grocery store and found a ginormous bag of dried mint for less than $2! Can’t wait to see how much oil and hydrosol it generates!

Ten days apart, I bought rosemary plants, hoping they would grow enough to make a batch of rosemary oil. They’ve literally been sitting side by side, so why is one dying!?! Well, we asked our friends at and learned that herbs available for purchase in the grocery store (clay pot rosemary) often can’t handle the transition from the greenhouse to the grocery store because it’s too hot inside. So in all probability, it wasn’t me that killed this plant! Let’s see how I do with the next one as I move it outside.

It was rough, man. For the last year our teeny living room was our only living space as we ripped apart our 98 year-old home to make room for the extreme farmhouse remodel. For nearly all of 2015, we ate in that room, did homeschool in that room, played in that room, relaxed (sort of…) in that …

Looking for ways to dry your clothes faster and keep them fresh smelling without buying commercial dryer sheets? With a little bit of wool and some essential oils, you can create wool dryer balls! They bounce to separate your clothes in the dryer, allowing them to dry faster, and can be scented with a couple of drops of essential oil or hydrosol for clean, fresh laundry. Here's how to make your own.

Learn how to make wool dryer balls, then save time, money, and energy by tossing four to six felted balls in with each dryer load. They also reduce static.
