Employee Spotlight: Mike H.

Our next Employee Spotlight is also known as “Hunter”—because, once again, we have several Mikes on staff, and we’ve got to keep them straight 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘸!

With an incredible 𝟒𝟑 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐌𝐒, Michael’s dedication and experience speak for themselves.

He first became certified as an EMT in 1982 while attending Murray State University, at just 20 years old. What started as a requirement for his sports medicine program quickly became a lifelong calling. Inspired by his instructor—a Vietnam War veteran and Army Medic—Mike discovered a deep appreciation for the history and evolution of emergency medicine, much of which grew out of lessons learned on the battlefield.

Before fully diving into EMS, Mike worked in a factory for four years. But his passion for helping others led him to a BLS ambulance service in Evansville, and eventually to Alexander Ambulance, the Paramedic service handling 9-1-1 calls across Vanderburgh County. Along the way, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Services from the University of Southern Indiana and completed numerous management courses to continue advancing his knowledge.

Some of Michael’s favorite memories come from early in his career when he would get to have conversations with World War II and Korean War veterans he encountered as patients. “They were a fascinating generation,” he recalls—moments that left a lasting impression on his approach to patient care.

Outside of EMS, Michael is a lifelong learner and creative mind. An early adopter of computers, he developed a love for graphic design, photography, and web design, often using those skills to serve his church and community.

Michael’s journey to Harrison County Hospital EMS began thanks to a familiar connection—Gary Kleeman, who brought him on board in the 1990s. After working PRN for several years, Michael joined full-time in 2007 and later stepped into his role as 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫, where he’s been shaping the next generation of EMS professionals ever since.

We’re so grateful for everything that Mike brings to our team-your experience, mentorship, and passion continue to make a lasting impact on HCH EMS!

Thanks to the partnership between LifeSprings Health Systems, Project CARE, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Corydon Police Department, and Harrison County EMS, our community continues to make important progress in the fight against addiction and overdoses.

Through the Project CARE Program, local law enforcement and first responders have worked together to reach out to individuals who have experienced overdoses or are struggling with substance use. The goal is to connect them directly with recovery resources and treatment services offering support instead of judgment.

72% of individuals contacted through Project CARE this year have been successfully connected to care and recovery services helping to save lives and provide a path toward long-term recovery.

In addition to outreach and education, Project CARE, through grant funding, provided eight Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and two AEDs to the Corydon Police Department. These lifesaving devices give first responders additional tools to act quickly during cardiac or overdose-related emergencies.

Project CARE (Community Awareness, Response, and Education) is a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing overdoses and connecting individuals with substance use disorders to treatment and support. The program focuses on follow-up outreach after overdose incidents, linking individuals to recovery services, and providing education and resources to families and community members affected by addiction.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, along with our community partners, remains committed to addressing addiction, reducing overdoses, and building a safer, healthier Harrison County.
