CBHC recently attended Head Start’s September Family School Meeting. Renee Fleming, LSW, talked to parents about how trauma impacts children’s behavior and the importance of parent emotional regulation. The event highlighted practical strategies parents can use to support children, foster resilience, and model healthy coping skills.

Parents learned how their own responses to stress directly influence their child’s emotions and behavior. The session provided tools for creating safety at home, encouraging open communication, and supporting healing after difficult experiences.

Trauma is subjective—what is traumatic for one person may not be for another. What can be measured are the effects on functioning, emotions, and behaviors, which helps guide treatment. Some ways to help are:

🛡️ Provide safety – Keep routines consistent and predictable.

👂 Listen & validate – Let them share feelings without judgment.

🎨 Encourage expression – Use play, art, or journaling to release emotions.

🤗 Offer comfort – Be patient, calm, and reassuring.

🧘 Teach coping skills – Practice deep breathing, mindfulness, or grounding.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Model calm behavior – Show healthy ways of handling stress.

💬 Keep communication open – Remind them it’s okay to ask for help.

👩‍⚕️ Seek support – Reach out to a counselor or therapist if needed.

In September we recognize Su***de Prevention, Self-Care Awareness & Recovery Month. We value the active role our local Head Start plays in supporting families with young children within our community.

Flashback to Recovery Month 2019

We couldn’t be prouder of John today. Not only has he achieved an incredible 15 years of sobriety, he continued his education & graduated with his Masters degree. In addition to being an amazing counselor, John now serves as the Assistant Clinical Director at CBHC. John’s journey is a powerful reminder of resilience, hard work, and the beauty of second chances.

Here’s to new beginnings, lifelong learning, and making a difference in our community—cheers to you, John, for inspiring us all with your courage and commitment!

Kayla's Word's:
There was a time when I thought I’d lost everything. Addiction stripped me of my health, my peace, and my hope. But the hardest part was losing custody of my kids. That broke me in a way nothing else ever could. The pain of being without them was so heavy that I tried to take my own life. I just couldn’t imagine living in a world where I wasn’t their mother.

But I survived and that survival changed everything. I realized that as long as I was still breathing, I had a chance to fight for them and for myself.

Recovery was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It wasn’t a straight line. There were setbacks, moments I wanted to quit, and days when shame told me I wasn’t worth saving. But I kept showing up. Treatment, support groups, and people who refused to give up on me gave me the strength to keep going. Every small step forward was proof that I was stronger than the voice that once told me I couldn’t change.

The best part of my story is this: I got my kids back. Today, I wake up with gratitude instead of despair. I get to be their mom again, fully, present, and sober. The love I feel when I look at them now is deeper than words because I know what it’s like to almost lose it all.

And now, I get to give back. I work in recovery, helping people who are where I once was. I get to sit with them in their pain and remind them that hope is real, that change is possible, and that they are not alone. My past became my purpose, and it drives me every single day.

If you take anything from my story, let it be this: no matter how far you’ve fallen, there is always a way back. I thought my life was over, but it was just beginning. If I can rise from that darkness and rebuild my life and my family, so can you.
