CPR is an acronym for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio meaning "of the heart" and pulmonary meaning "of the lungs" combined with resuscitation "to revive" or to bring back to life. CPR utilizes a few key steps to help victims of sudden cardiac arrest survive. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among adults. Most arrest do occur in persons with underlying heart diseases but could happen to anyone at anytime, including children. CPR doubles the chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. If CPR is initiated within 4 minutes of collapse and defibrillation is provided within 10 minutes a person has a 40% chance of survival.
