Why do we sedate patients before pain injections?

People with chronic pain are extra sensitive to any pain stimulus. Sedation helps keep the procedure safe and comfortable, and your comfort and safety always come first.

Did you know there’s more than one type of epidural injection?

There are several options—like facet joint blocks, transforaminal epidurals, and the most common one, translaminar epidurals. If these don’t provide relief, the next step may be consulting a spine surgeon for further evaluation.

How long do epidural injections last?

Epidural injections provide temporary pain relief, usually from 1 week to 1 month.
Everyone’s experience is different — some patients feel relief for weeks, others for months, depending on the injury or condition.

Epidurals are a great tool to help manage pain while you explore other treatments.

How soon can you return to normal activities after an epidural injection?

After an epidural injection, most patients can typically return to their normal activities within 3–5 days. It also depends on how you’re feeling and how quickly you start to notice relief.

We always remind patients not to get too excited too fast and to stay cautious. While the pain may improve, the injury is still there. The medication can relieve and mask symptoms, but it doesn’t mean the underlying issue is fully healed.

Most importantly, always ask your doctor before returning to normal or strenuous activities after your injection.

Worried about pain during your injection? Don’t be!
Jim explains that local anesthetic is applied first, so the area is numb before the needle goes in. The procedure is quick — usually just 2–3 minutes.

Using x-ray fluoroscopy and contrast, we make sure the injection reaches the exact spot that needs treatment for the most effective relief.

Can I get an injection in addition to physical therapy?

Yes — and it can be a highly effective combination for pain relief.

Patients often receive epidural or pain-management injections along with physical therapy, or after completing several PT sessions if they still need extra relief. Using both treatments together can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support a smoother recovery.
