Think a simple ankle sprain is no big deal? Your joints may remember it.

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that stabilize the ankle are stretched or torn during a sudden twist or roll. These ligaments help keep the joint stable when you walk, run, or change direction.

After the initial injury, the body may heal the tissue, but the joint can sometimes lose some of its stability or coordination. When this happens, the ankle may not respond as effectively to sudden movements or uneven surfaces.

Research suggests that about 40% of first-time ankle sprains may lead to chronic ankle instability within a year if the joint does not regain proper strength and control.

Dr. G often emphasizes the importance of restoring joint mobility, balance, and muscle support around the ankle. Proper rehabilitation can help the joint regain stability and reduce the likelihood of recurring sprains.

Healthy joints rely on regular movement.

Unlike many other tissues in the body, joint cartilage does not have its own direct blood supply. Instead, it receives nutrients through movement and changes in joint pressure during activity.

Research in musculoskeletal health shows that gentle, repetitive motion helps circulate synovial fluid within the joint. This fluid helps lubricate the joint surfaces and supports smoother movement.

When joints remain inactive for long periods, they may feel stiff or less mobile because this natural lubrication process slows down.

Dr. G often encourages patients to include regular movement throughout the day. Activities like walking, mobility exercises, and posture breaks can help keep the joints and spine functioning well.

Movement plays a key role in supporting long-term joint health.

Desk job? Long commute? Evening TV time? Your sitting hours might add up faster than you think.

Most people don’t realize how much time they spend sitting until they start paying attention. Between desk work, driving, meals, and screen time at home, those hours can add up quickly.

When the body stays seated for long periods, the hips remain flexed and the muscles that support the spine may become less active. This position can place additional load on the lower back and encourage the head and shoulders to drift forward.

Over time, these posture habits may contribute to neck tension, back discomfort, or stiffness in the hips.

Dr. G often reminds patients that the body responds best to regular movement throughout the day. Standing up, stretching, or walking for a few minutes periodically can help reset posture and support spinal health.

Do you always carry your purse on the same shoulder without thinking about it?

Most people have a “default side” where their bag naturally rests. Over time, that habit can cause one shoulder to carry more weight throughout the day.

Many patients notice tension on one side of the neck or shoulder after long days of carrying a purse, work bag, or tote.

Dr. G often suggests a simple posture habit: switch shoulders occasionally. Alternating sides can help prevent one set of muscles from doing all the work.

It’s a small change, but these everyday habits can influence how the neck, shoulders, and upper back feel over time.

Does your back feel sore after a few hours in the garden?

Gardening often involves positions we don’t practice much during daily life. Bending over flower beds, kneeling to pull weeds, and lifting bags of soil can place unexpected stress on the back.

Many patients tell Dr. G they feel fine while gardening but notice stiffness later that evening or the next morning.

In many cases, the issue isn’t gardening itself. It’s staying in the same position for too long.

Changing positions, kneeling instead of bending at the waist, and using a small stool or raised garden bed can help reduce strain on the spine.

With a few simple posture habits, gardening can stay enjoyable without leaving your back feeling overworked.

Does your neck start feeling stiff after a long day at the computer or on your phone?

For many people, neck pain doesn’t begin with an injury. It develops slowly through daily habits.

Hours spent looking down at a phone, leaning toward a computer screen, or sitting with rounded shoulders can gradually place extra stress on the neck. The muscles around the cervical spine try to support that position, often leading to tightness and fatigue.

Many patients who visit Dr. G say their neck pain shows up as stiffness when turning their head, tension across the shoulders, or headaches that appear later in the day.

Sometimes the body is simply responding to how it has been positioned for long periods of time.
