GOOD FAT, BAD FAT...
Instead of boring you with details, here are time tested facts regarding edible fats:
GOOD - avocado, nuts, olives, olive oil, peanut butter, almond butter, fish oils (that which is found in fish, not just the pill form).
With the exception of fish, these are plant oils.
OK to eat, but less or none is best:
fat in meat and poultry, fat in milk, cheese, butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and other foods derived from milk. These are land animal fats. Among this group, wild meat like venison has better fat than farmed meat.
Bad, really bad, avoid:
trans fats, also known as hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated oils, margarine, etc. These are chemically altered oils. Your body doesn't know how to deal with them,
so they just sit on arteries, increase inflammation everywhere, just plain bad. You have to read ingredients to find these. You'll notice them in packaged food. Most crackers have them, flavored chips, breaded meats, cereals, microwave popcorn, flavored popcorn, pseudo-butter on popcorn at theaters and pseudo-cheese in fast food places, many sliced "Cheese foods", soft creamy peanut butter, candy, many if not most breads, cakes, the list is endless.
Why do manufacturers use hydrogenated oils? Because they are cheap, they don't go bad and have increased shelf life.
Contrary to trans fats, good fats are necessary for health. Amongst others, your hormonal and immune systems suffer without them. Avoiding all fat is dangerous.
I am not suggesting everyone become health freaks and read ingredients at the next birthday party! But I am sharing that we all get plenty of bad oils when we eat out, when we are at gatherings,
at celebrations, or out of town.
If you have kids, they get more hydrogenated oils than adults. Just check the after-sport snacks next time. At the very least we can monitor what we purchase at the store, and minimize the not-so-good.
Conclusion: fish and plant-derived fats are best, animal fats are OK, hydrogenated fats are terrible.
