Cholesterol is so tricky for so many patients. Some patients respond well to high fat diets (the A-Z study showed a bigger reduction in cholesterol with the Atkins diet than with the Dean Ornish diet!). For other patients, reducing saturated fat is important. Are you making your cholesterol or absorbing it? These are different treatment processes. What's the activity level? What's the inflammation level? There's a lot here to unpack, a statin is a one size fits all and may improve your numbers but it's hard to say that it necessarily means you are healthier after taking them. About 75% of heart attacks and strokes take place in the context of normal cholesterol. It's complicated. We help you understand what's going on and how to get to the bottom of it.

Reducing sodium intake and replacing it with increased potassium following a stroke reduces the risk of future strokes. Sodium/potassium pumps are so crucial to cell function and serve as the basis for many aspects of cellular biochemistry. It's great to see studies finally including the importance of potassium to sodium ratios in these studies rather than just focussing on sodium intake.

This cluster randomized clinical trial evaluated if a reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt substitute compared with regular salt decreases the risk of stroke recurrence and death in patients with a history of stroke.
