                                            *****CALENDULA*****
Apollo's Apothecary Pain Relieving Oil has many herbal ingredients, but calendula is probably my favorite and it is one of the most important ingredients in it. It's been used for centuries as a culinary and medicinal herb. Its bright and warm color has been used as a dye for cheese and butter.
I first became interested in calendula when I learned that it was used during the Civil War. It was packed directly into open wounds to stop blood flow, as well as used by surgeons when dressing wounds to promote healing and prevent infection. They also used it as an antiseptic for skin wounds like burns, cuts and scrapes.
In addition to everything else, calendula can reduce acne and redness, heal skin in general, and is good for eczema and itchy skin.
Calendula gets its yellow and orange tons from a substance called carotenoid. It also contains a flavonoid substance, which acts as an anti-inflammatory both when eaten as a flower or used as oil on your skin. It can treat acne, sunburn, blackheads, eczema, and dermatitis.
Calendula leaves and florets can be used in cooking as seasoning for sauces, soups, and porridge. Dried and powdered flower blossoms can be used as a saffron substitute. The flower is used as a digestive remedy and can be made into an infusion or tincture.
