As we head into Trunk or Treat / Trick or Treat season, its important to recognize the treats you should avoid if you are in orthodontic treatment. To help you out, we compiled a list of the "No-No's" and the "Let's GO's"! 🎃

👎🏻No-No's are things that are sticky, chewy or crunchy. These items can cause damage to your expanders, brackets and wires.

👍🏻Let's Go's are things that are safe (orthodontically speaking)! These items are typically soft and easy to chew. Thank goodness that list is longer, right?!

Did we miss anything? Is there something you are sure about? Let us know in the comments below and we will let you know which list it falls under! 🍭🍬🍫🧁

In honor of National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Bauer recently visited a local school to discuss the importance of establishing good brushing and flossing habits early!

Here at Bauer Orthodontics, we understand that for some kids, the only thing scarier than Halloween is visiting a doctor's office! 👻

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with the kids outside of the office to enforce a positive relationship between the children and the dentist/orthodontist. 🦷

Thank you, The St. Austin School for letting us come hang out with you all! 🎃

WHAT TYPES OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT ARE AVAILABLE?

Historically, the only choice in wearing braces was the conventional, bulky type requiring tightening every few weeks. Today, while traditional appliances are still available, there are other options for you to choose from.

After X-rays, intra-oral photos and a consultation, Dr. Bauer will recommend a personalized treatment plan, which may include metal or clear braces, appliances, or aligners, to create a happy, healthy smile for each individual patient.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE THE ORTHODONTIST?

Early intervention can make a dramatic impact on establishing the proper occlusal foundation. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children have a check-up with an orthodontist by the time they reach age 7, for early detection of any potential problems. By the age 7, some of the permanent teeth have erupted, so that most children have a mix of adult and baby teeth. At this stage of mixed dentition, we can spot potential orthodontic problems related to jaw growth and eruption of adult teeth. Some growth-related orthodontic problems are easier to correct when they are identified early…while the facial bones are still growing.

An early exam allows us to determine how and when a child's particular jaw and/or dental problems should be corrected for the optimal results. Early treatment, or phase one therapy, may be needed to create a better environment to idealize the occlusion for the patient or possibly create an environment to elevate treatment forever. An early orthodontic examination does not always result in immediate treatment. After evaluating your child, we may simply want to monitor your child periodically while the permanent teeth erupt and the jaws and face continue to develop.

At Bauer Orthodontics we offer complimentary consultations which include x-rays, photos and a complete oral exam. Contact the office today to schedule!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DENTIST AND AN ORTHODONTIST?

Dentists are concerned with overall oral health. Dentists treat decayed teeth (fillings) and remove failed teeth (extractions). They usually provide services such as crowns, veneers or bonding to improve the appearance and function of teeth that have extensive decay or are misshapen or broken. Dentists look for abnormalities in the mouth and teach patients how to prevent dental disease.

Orthodontists are specialists who focus on your bite and alignment of your teeth. Their job is to ensure that your smile looks great and that your bite feels good and functions properly. Straightening teeth and aligning the bite are both complex biological processes requiring more than a quick fix. Orthodontists are experts in both and are equipped to provide a custom treatment plan that is right for you.

Good information from Drs. Homer Sedighi & Jessica Martin, Pediatric Dentists St. Louis!

Does your child need braces? Orthodontic issues can start developing earlier than most parents realize.

Signs such as crowded teeth, difficulty biting, overbites, or even prolonged thumb-sucking can all point to the need for braces in the future.

By catching these concerns early, you can help set your child up for a healthier, straighter smile that lasts a lifetime!

Have you noticed any of these signs in your child’s smile? Tell us about their smile in the comments.
