It’s Child Passenger Safety Week! And while most people think about car seats and seat belts, CPS Week is also a reminder that keeping kids safe in and around cars means so much more.

Never leave a baby alone in a car, not even for a minute. Even as September temperatures cool down, the inside of a car can heat up fast, nearly 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, and cracking the window doesn’t help.

Child car safety:
From birth until height and weight limits are reached: Rear facing car seat with a harness in the back seat of the car

After outgrowing rear facing seat until height and weight limits are reached: Forward facing seat with a harness and top tether in the back seat

After outgrowing forward facing seat: A belt positioning booster seat until the seat belt fits correctly without one (usually between 9-12 years of age)

After outgrowing the booster: Always buckle up and remain in the back seat until at least 13 years of age

🚂 Did you know a freight train can take more than a mile to stop? The length of 18 football fields! That’s why it’s not safe to play, walk, jog, or ride a bike on railroad tracks.

By the time a train engineer sees someone on the tracks, it’s too late for them to stop in time. To stay safe at a railroad crossing, kids should learn to only cross at places marked with a sign, lights, or a gate.

See Tracks? Think Train.

Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States. Always buckle children in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts. Learn more about child passenger safety at cdc.gov/child-passenger-safety/about/?CDC_AAref_Val=.
