Prioritizing Peace: Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at New Roads Treatment, we want to remind you that your mental well-being is just as important as your physical health.

Living with a mental health condition can often feel like navigating a storm, but you don't have to weather it alone. Whether you are managing anxiety, depression, or the complexities of dual-diagnosis recovery, taking the first step toward support is an act of incredible bravery.

This month, let’s commit to:

Breaking the Stigma: Talking openly about our struggles helps others feel safe to do the same.

Practicing Self-Compassion: Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a dear friend.

Seeking Connection: Reach out to your community, a support group, or a professional when things feel heavy.

Healing isn't a linear path, but it is a path worth taking. We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment where you can find the tools and community needed to reclaim your peace.

If you or a loved one are struggling, remember that help is available and hope is real. 🌿

New Roads Team Completes Prolonged Exposure Therapy Training

This month, the New Roads Behavioral Health team, along with select members of the Odyssey and Balance House teams, had the incredible opportunity to participate in specialized training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy, led by Eric and accredited through the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is one of the most researched and effective treatments available for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Rooted in decades of clinical science, PE helps patients gradually and safely confront trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations they have been avoiding. Through this structured and evidence-based approach, individuals can significantly reduce the intensity of trauma symptoms and regain a greater sense of control in their lives.

Eric’s training provided clinicians with both the theoretical foundation and practical tools necessary to implement PE with confidence and fidelity to the model. Participants engaged in case consultation, skill-building exercises, and discussions around how to thoughtfully integrate Prolonged Exposure into the levels of care offered at New Roads, Odyssey, and Balance House.

What makes this training particularly meaningful is its accreditation through the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine—home to some of the original developers and leading researchers of Prolonged Exposure Therapy. This ensures our clinicians are learning directly from the gold standard in trauma treatment.

At New Roads, we are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care. Investing in advanced training like Prolonged Exposure strengthens our clinical excellence and expands the tools available to support patients navigating the effects of trauma.

We are grateful to Eric for sharing his expertise and for helping our teams continue to grow in skill, confidence, and impact. This collaboration across programs reflects our shared commitment to providing transformative care for those we serve.

✨ Understanding BPD: Healing is Possible ✨

Living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can often feel like navigating a world where the emotional volume is always turned up to the max. At New Roads Behavioral Health, we want you to know: You are not "difficult," and you are not alone. BPD is a complex mental health condition, but with the right evidence-based treatment, a "life worth living" is within your reach. Our specialized BPD program focuses on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)—the gold standard for treating BPD.

How we help you find balance:
🌱 Mindfulness: Learning to stay present in the moment without judgment.
🌱 Distress Tolerance: Building the "muscles" to get through intense emotions without acting on impulse.
🌱 Emotion Regulation: Understanding and thinning out the intensity of emotional waves.
🌱 Interpersonal Effectiveness: Tools to build and maintain healthy, stable relationships.

At New Roads, we don't just treat symptoms; we support the whole person. Our dual-diagnosis expertise ensures that we address any co-occurring challenges alongside your BPD journey.

The road to emotional stability starts with a single step. 💙

Returning to Stillness: A Mindfulness Retreat Rooted in DBT Tradition

New Roads Behavioral Health was honored to sponsor a three-day silent mindfulness retreat led by Cedar C***s—a respected teacher, expert in mindfulness, and longtime collaborator and dear friend of Marsha Linehan, the founder of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

The retreat was held at the Redemptorist Renewal Center in Tucson, a location rich with meaning in the DBT community. It was here in the early 2000s that Marsha and Cedar began hosting mindfulness retreats specifically designed for therapists practicing DBT—creating a space where clinicians could deepen their own practice while reconnecting with the foundational principles of presence, awareness, and compassion.

This year’s retreat continued that tradition. Over three days, participants engaged in sustained silence, guided meditation, and mindful movement. The intentional quiet created space for reflection and renewal, allowing attendees to step away from daily demands and return to the core of mindfulness practice.

For clinicians and staff, this kind of immersive experience is more than restorative—it is essential. DBT emphasizes that therapists must embody the skills they teach, and mindfulness is at the heart of that work. By cultivating non-judgmental awareness and present-moment focus within themselves, team members are better able to model and guide these practices with the patients they serve.

New Roads is proud to support opportunities like this that strengthen both personal and professional growth. Investing in our teams’ well-being and ongoing development ultimately enhances the care we provide to our patients, reinforcing our commitment to delivering the highest quality DBT-informed treatment.

We are grateful to Cedar C***s for her wisdom and leadership, and to all who participated in continuing this meaningful tradition.

Among the Best: Megan Vernon Earns DBT-Linehan Certification

We’re proud to celebrate an exciting achievement by Megan Vernon, who has officially passed the exam to become a Certified DBT Clinician through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification.

This is no small feat—there are only nine DBT-Linehan–certified clinicians in the entire state of Utah, and an incredible one-third of them are part of the New Roads Behavioral Health team: Eric Schmidt, Jordan Harmon, and now Megan Vernon.

We would have made it ten if not for Rachel Gitlin, who passed the exam and then relocated to Australia—where she is now one of only seven DBT-Linehan–certified clinicians in the entire country.

Congratulations, Megan! Your dedication, expertise, and commitment to excellence continue to elevate our clinical team and the care we provide.

Brad Hieb and Matt Borget recently attended the NATSAP conference, connecting with leaders in residential treatment, therapeutic boarding schools, and wilderness therapy.

NATSAP supports ethical and professional growth, fosters collaboration, and shares best practices—but is not a licensing or accrediting body. Its mission: advance therapeutic care and uphold the highest standards for programs helping youth with emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.

Matt and Brad returned inspired, bringing back insights to help New Roads continue delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care.
