B K S Iyengar: Most may not be familiar with the name, but most are familiar of the word “yoga”. His life is a contribution to the spread of yoga worldwide.
It is difficult to give justice in few words to someone who has masterminded and revolutionized a way for millions of people to find unity between the purusa and the prakrti, the body and the soul. His iconic presence and his life testament stand a firm reminder for all to recognize and value in high regard. A writer, teacher, philanthropist and true devotee to the path of yoga, his work includes detailed books on asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control), and many more relating to the philosophy of the yoga sutras. He practiced yoga daily until his dying age of 95.
I was lucky enough to study yoga from one of Iyengar’s students. My teacher spoke with such sincere respect and admiration about his teacher, Iyengar. His appreciation was apparent and genuine, another reminder of the value and impact of Iyengar’s life.
The system of yoga is a strategic 8-limb system that facilitates in bringing upon spiritual enlightenment and physical attunement.
Practicing yoga encourages healthy examination of the self. Replacing unhealthy emotions with healthy ones. Establishes a connection with your body that takes one closer to the connection with the mind. Advanced yoga practitioners can control their Karma by practicing unattached action (Nishkama Karma), which leads to the salvation of the soul. Yoga helps one tap into the benefits that karma offers by practicing asanas (postures) and living the philosophy of the yoga sutras.
Yoga provides the ability to gain spiritual enlightenment and is also a safe alternative for treating hundreds of medical conditions. Any person, any age can practice yoga, the only limitations to the practice is the lack of knowledge.
Perhaps B K S Iyengar’s most popular book is “Light on Yoga”, which is a true yoga dictionary, and a treasure to anyone wanting to know more about the physical aspect and benefits of yoga.
In loving memory of B. K. S. Iyengar
