Seasonal depression—often called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—can affect older adults, especially during fall and winter months when daylight is limited. It’s more common than many people realize and can sometimes be mistaken for “normal aging” or general fatigue.

What puts older adults at higher risk of seasonal depression?
🔹Less daylight exposure: Shorter days and spending more time indoors
🔹Social isolation: Fewer activities and visits during colder months
🔹Health conditions: Chronic illness, pain, or limited mobility
🔹Loss and life changes: Grief, retirement, or reduced independence
🔹Vitamin D deficiency: Less sunlight can impact mood and energy

Common signs to watch for include:
🔹Persistent sadness or low mood
🔹Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
🔹Increased sleep or trouble getting out of bed
🔹Low energy or fatigue
🔹Changes in appetite
🔹Withdrawal from friends, family, or social activities
🔹Increased feelings of hopelessness or irritability
