August 21 is National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, a moment to spotlight the deadly reach of fentanyl in our communities. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids remain a major factor in overdose fatalities.

At Crossroads we continue to prioritize evidence-based care, harm reduction and patient education to help prevent fentanyl-related deaths. Awareness and access to treatment save lives.

Every day, stigma keeps people suffering in silence. Nearly 90% of individuals with a substance use disorder don’t receive treatment — not because help doesn’t exist, but because they’re afraid of being judged.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), stigma is one of the leading barriers to treatment, creating fear, shame and social isolation that prevent people from reaching out. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Crossroads is proud to announce that we have officially received our three-year CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation for our Tennessee office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) programs. This is our first-ever accreditation for our OBOT locations! We are currently in the process of accrediting our Virginia OBOTs – and are working toward getting CARF accreditation across all of our OBOT centers! A CARF designation is like a gold star for Crossroads in substance use disorder treatment. It shows we meet rigorous quality standards, ensuring our patients receive excellent care. When you see a CARF designation, you can trust that Crossroads has gone the extra mile to provide top-notch services and support.

Addiction doesn't discriminate, yet stigma makes us believe it only affects certain types of people. The reality is that substance use disorders impact individuals across all demographics—every race, gender, age, income level and educational background. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, addiction affects CEOs and cashiers, teachers and students, parents and children.

When we perpetuate stereotypes about what addiction "looks like," we make it harder for people to recognize their own struggles and seek help. People from all walks of life struggle with substance use disorders. Each and every one of them deserves compassion and access to care. Addiction has many faces and recovery is possible for everyone.
