Many things that are truly good for us benefit us on multiple levels. Take exercise, for example—we've long understood its physical benefits, but research continues to reveal its positive impact beyond the body. Similarly, fasting, which has long been valued for its spiritual significance, is now being recognized for its physical and cognitive benefits as well. This post from Physical Therapy Session highlights this connection with regard to fasting. Some good food for thought as we enter this Lenten Season. 😊

Fasting alters brain function by influencing neurotransmitters, neuroplasticity, and metabolic processes. Studies using functional MRI (fMRI) and PET scans show that fasting increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports neuronal growth and cognitive function. It also shifts energy metabolism from glucose to ketones, enhancing mitochondrial efficiency and reducing oxidative stress. Research indicates that intermittent fasting can improve synaptic plasticity and may protect against neurodegenerative diseases.

Evidence:

A study in Neuron (2017) found that fasting boosts BDNF, enhancing learning and memory.

Research in Nature Reviews Neuroscience (2020) reported that ketones improve brain energy metabolism and resilience.

An fMRI study in Cell Metabolism (2021) showed fasting modulates brain networks linked to focus and mood.

This is a picture of the first Mardi Gras we had a Moshen. It was 2021 and the City of Covington did something called Rolling on the Three Rivers because the parades were canceled. Each business in the downtown area was a "float". You can see Sir Isaac Newton sitting on the porch telling everyone our theme - "An object in /moSH(e)n/ stays in Motion"

Today is World Teacher's Day! There are many things I learned from my great friend and mentor, Greg Zelden, who came from a wonderful family of teachers. One of the most important lessons is that, as physical therapists, we are educators. We educate our patients to empower them to become active participants in their care. I learned so much from Greg, and I miss him dearly.

I’d love to hear any memories you have of Greg that you’d like to share. If you’re inclined, please check out the foundation in his name, Greg Zelden Foundation that provides scholarships to continue his legacy as a physical therapist and teacher.
