The end of the year isn’t really an ending.

It’s a continuation.
A refinement.
A commitment to keep growing.

We’ve been spending time thinking about how growth actually works, and what it should look like.

Mental health isn’t static, and neither are we.
Stay tuned.

As we wrap up 2025, we wanted to take a moment to pause and reflect.

This year certainly had its bumps in the road. It brought challenges that required flexibility, resilience, and teamwork. At the same time, 2025 was a year of real growth. We added some truly awesome new folks to our team, opened a new Ft. Mitchell office, expanded our school partnerships, and saw more people reaching out for help navigating life.

What stands out most is the people; the clinicians who show up every day with care and skill, the clients who trusted us with their stories, and the community that continues to remind us why this work matters.

We’re heading into 2026 focused on continuity and thoughtful growth, continuing to provide high-quality, skills-based therapy in an environment that feels supportive and human.

Here’s to helping people feel better, think clearer, and live well, together.

We’ve always had a thoughtful relationship with Google reviews at Mainspring.

On one hand, we know they help people find us and can make the process of finding a therapist a little easier. On the other, we also know how vulnerable it can feel to publicly share a therapy experience.

We’re deeply grateful to the folks who choose to do so. It takes real courage, and it helps make mental healthcare feel more human.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Mainspring. Thanks for being part of our community this year!

Once you’ve stopped, breathed, and processed, the question becomes, “Now what?”

This is where “Proceed” comes in. Many decisions are made in response to emotion. You can usually tell when that’s happening because the decision is about moving away from something; a feeling you don’t like, a situation you want to escape, or discomfort you want to quiet as quickly as possible.

Emotion-based decisions aren’t wrong. They’re fully human, but when they’re the only thing guiding us, we tend to react instead of choose.

Proceeding is about shifting toward value-based decisions instead. Value-based decisions are about moving toward something (your goals, your values, or the kind of person you want to be) even when you feel uncertain, scared, or uncomfortable in the moment.

The earlier steps help make that possible. They create enough clarity and grounding to pause and choose direction over relief.

A practical way to try this:

Before making a decision, ask yourself:

· Am I trying to move away from discomfort, or toward something that matters to me?
· If the feeling wasn’t the deciding factor, what would I choose?

Proceeding doesn’t mean having a perfect plan for the new year. It means taking the next step with intention, guided by what matters and not just how you feel in the moment.

This is Proceed, the final step in our Stop. Breathe. Process. Proceed. series. You can read the full approach in our blog post in the comments below.

Your brain is a big, dark place.

There are a lot of thoughts in there; some troubling, some motivating, some random, and some honestly pretty funny. Unfortunately, you don’t have any control over which thoughts show up. The only thing you have is a flashlight. You get to choose which thoughts you shine a light on.

That’s what processing really is. It’s not about stopping thoughts or replacing them with positive ones. It’s about noticing what’s there and intentionally paying attention to the thoughts that work with you, rather than against you. Where your attention goes, your thinking and actions tends to follow.

A practical way to try this today:

When you notice your mind spinning, pause and ask:
• Which thought am I shining the light on right now?
• Is this thought helping me move forward or moving me away from what’s important?

You don’t have to argue with the unhelpful thought or get rid of it. It just requires a gentle shift the flashlight. Notice a different thought. Processing isn’t about controlling your mind, it’s about choosing where your attention goes.

This is Process, the third step in our Stop. Breathe. Process. Proceed. series. You can read more about the full approach in our blog (in the comments below)

When things feel overwhelming, most people try to think their way out of it.

The problem with doing that too quickly is that clear thinking usually comes after our body response settles. That’s why the next step is simple: Breathe.

Slow, deep breathing changes what’s happening in your nervous system. As your breath slows, stress signals quiet, oxygen flow to the brain improves, and the parts responsible for planning, decision-making, and perspective start working more effectively. In short, when our breathing is regulated, our thinking often gets clearer.

A practical way to try this today: Try triangle breathing.

· Inhale slowly.
· Pause briefly.
· Exhale slowly.

Each part gets about the same amount of time, smooth and even. You can you this anytime you feel rushed or reactive. It’s a small shift, but it can noticeably change how clearly you think in the moment.

This is Breathe, the second step in our Stop. Breathe. Process. Proceed. series. You can read more about the full approach in our blog (link in the comments below).

As the year winds down, a lot of us move through our days on defense. We react to the days ups and downs quickly, moving from one thing to the next because it feels like there's a lot to get done.

The first step in preparing for the new year is simple. Stop.

Take some time to pause, long enough to notice how you’re actually doing, before reacting out of habit or pressure.

A small way to practice this today:

Before responding to an email, text, or request, pause for a few seconds. Notice what you’re feeling and what your instinct is, without fixing or judging it. That brief pause interrupts autopilot and creates space for clearer thinking. It helps to organize your priorities, manage your energy and stress levels, and make better, value-based decisions.

This is the first step in our Stop. Breathe. Process. Proceed. series. You can read more about the full idea in our blog (posted in the comments).
