The big toe plays a crucial role in standing, walking and many other daily activities. With all that the big toe endures, it comes as no surprise that overuse can erode the joint cartilage and cause serious pain and even physical deformities, like arthritis. Foot and ankle surgeons urge people to pay attention to the early warning signs of big toe arthritis. If treated early, surgeons can alleviate the symptoms and possibly slow down the progression of the disease with less invasive procedures. However for mid- to late-stage arthritis, surgeons look to next-step treatments, including joint implants, surgical removal and joint fusion. If you are experience pain and stiffness in your big toe, see a foot and ankle surgeon right away.

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone that can be caused by a variety of bacteria or fungus, the most common being staphylococcus aureus.

This serious infection can occur from a number of sources:
- It may enter bone through an injury, such as an open fracture with the bone ends piercing the skin.
- It can spread from elsewhere in the body or through the bloodstream.
- It can result from a chronic foot wound or infection, such as a diabetic ulcer.

To diagnose the condition, a foot and ankle surgeon will examine the area and may order blood tests and x-rays or other imaging studies. Treatment options include surgery, antibiotic therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

When arthritis affects the ankle joint, it can produce swelling and pain and may eventually result in deformity, loss of joint function and decreased ability to walk. While the most common form of ankle arthritis is osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the ankle. Symptoms include pain and stiffness in the joint, swelling in or near the joint and difficulty walking or bending the joint. If you have these persistent symptoms, see a foot and ankle surgeon for help.
