Students in the Dental Assisting program at TCAT Northwest’s Covington campus are gaining hands-on experience with suture removal—an essential skill permitted for Dental Assistants under current Tennessee Board of Dentistry guidelines.

Instructor Teresa Cantrell goes beyond the basics, also teaching her students how to place sutures in anticipation of future changes in dental practice regulations. Instead of traditional practice materials like pigs’ feet or hot dogs, this class used chicken for its realistic texture, which closely resembles the oral cavity.

“Chicken provides a more lifelike experience, helping students build confidence and competence,” said Cantrell.
