Every spring, families across Appalachia did something the rest of the country barely knew about. They climbed the hill. 🏔️

Decoration Day, sometimes called Homecoming, was one of the most sacred traditions in mountain life. Families would gather at the old home cemetery, often on a Sunday in late spring, to clean the graves, pull the weeds, and lay fresh wildflowers on the stones of their people. It wasn't just about the dead. It was about the living, too.

Cousins who hadn't seen each other since the last Decoration Day would reunite. Old hymns would be sung. Stories would be told about the ones buried in the ground. Children would learn the names carved into the stones and hear why those names mattered. The whole hollow would come together, and for one day, the past and the present were the same thing.

This tradition predates Memorial Day in many parts of Appalachia, and in some communities, it's still going strong. 🌿
