Beautiful testimony of how transformative EMDR can be. Healing is possible ๐ŸคŽ

Understanding EMDR โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a therapy approach designed to help the brain process and heal from difficult or distressing experiences.

Sometimes when something overwhelming happens, the brain stores the memory in a way that keeps the emotions, sensations, and beliefs connected to it feeling โ€œstuck.โ€ This is why certain memories or triggers can continue to bring up strong reactions long after the event has passed.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these experiences so they feel less distressing and easier to hold. During EMDR, therapists use bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements or tapping) while a person briefly focuses on aspects of a memory.

Over time, this process can help reduce the emotional intensity connected to the experience and allow the brain to integrate the memory in a healthier way.

The goal isnโ€™t to erase the past, but to help it feel like something that happened โ€” rather than something youโ€™re still reliving.

Social work found me in an unconventional way. Throughout high school and college, I loved working as a CNA and home health aide. However, I began to realize that nursing did not feel like the right fit. I was fortunate to have two of my best friends suggest I consider majoring in social work. I came to understand that what I was truly drawn to was not the medical side of caregiving, but the human connection, advocacy, and emotional support. Once I made the switch, I felt an immediate sense of alignment. I had found the career path that truly fit me.

What continues to inspire me about social work is its deeply rooted values: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These principles reflect the way I strive to live, both professionally and personally.

I also appreciate that social work views mental health through a broader lens. It acknowledges that well-being is shaped not only by internal processes, but also by external systems and socioeconomic challenges. That holistic perspective is what drew me to the field, and I truly cannot imagine building a career in anything else.
