ROSEOLA: INFECTION AFFECTING THE YOUNG
Roseola is a viral infection that effects young children typically between the ages of six and fifteen months. This condition causes days of fever followed by an immediate rash. The virus may stay in the child's body for up to two weeks before signs and symptoms of an infection appear. Roseola presents as a sudden, high fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater along with a sore throat and a runny nose for three to five days. Lymph node swelling in the neck may appear as well. A rash often appears on the chest, back, stomach, neck and arms immediately after the fever resolves. The rash can last for hours or days before going away. It is not itchy and usually appears as small dots. Mild diarrhea, swollen eyelids, and a lack spread very quickly to other children.
Roseola will usually last for a week and most cases will resolve on its own. A doctor can assist in choosing an appropriate over-the-counter (OTC) medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help reduce fever. Aspirin products should be avoided in children with flu-like symptoms because it can lead to a life-threatening condition called Reye's syndrome.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT CROUP
Croup is a term that refers to an infection of the airways. It affects breathing which leads to a typical barking type of cough. This cough is a result of the swelling of the airways and tubes in the lungs. Although the cough sounds hoarse, the condition is not serious and can be treated without emergency care. Croup typically occurs in children less that three years of age. It can begin as a cold and the inflammation leads to a characteristic barking cough. The cough can worsen when the child becomes agitated and cries. The symptoms can last up to five days. The infection is spread by a virus. Emergency care would be necessary in the event the child has difficulty breathing.
Measures should be taken to sooth the child and lessen the cough. A doctor may inject a medication called glucocorticoid such as dexamethasone to help reduce inflammation in the airways to allow the child to breathe easier. Side effects of glucocorticoids may include increased hunger, difficulty falling asleep, increased blood pressure, and increased blood sugar levels. Some doctors may inject epinephrine to help with breathing. Epinephrine is a chemical that helps boost and increases the lung's ability to take breaths.

PHARMACISTS IMPORTANT IN HEART CARE
A recent study in Canada published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that pharmacists can help reduce the risk of events such a heart attack and stroke in people with poorly controlled risk factors for heart disease. High risk individuals for heart disease were divided and sent to one group of pharmacists for medication therapy management. Another group received normal non-specialized care. At the end of the three month research, people who received medication therapy management with their pharmacist had a twenty one percent lower risk of heat problems compared to the other group. Other benefits that were seen in the intensive group included a reduction in blood pressure, a reduction in smoking, and a reduction in am important marker for the people with diabetes.
Medication therapy management is a service provided by many trained pharmacists where a person's medications are reviewed and managed to help improve overall health.
