“The Gift of Being Different” is a short documentary that follows Grant Bruno, a Cree researcher and father to autistic children, as he explores autism through the lens of Indigenous culture.

Grant Bruno is a registered member of nîpisîhkopâhk (Samson Cree Nation) in Maskwacîs, Alberta. His work challenges mainstream narratives about autism by highlighting how his community views neurodiversity not as a deficit, but as a gift. The film emphasizes the importance of cultural context in understanding autism.

Bruno’s research and advocacy focus on:

· Community-driven perspectives on autism and neurodevelopmental differences

· Culturally responsive caregiving that honors Indigenous values

· Reframing autism as a unique way of being rather than something to be “fixed”

This documentary is part of a broader movement to decolonize autism discourse and elevate Indigenous voices in neurodiversity conversations. You can watch it on YouTube. The Gift of Being Different

Stigma doesn’t come from autism—it comes from misunderstanding it. By challenging misconceptions, we create space for autistic individuals to be seen, heard, and supported. Changing Autism Stigma Starts with Us!

Here’s how we can change it:

Listen to autistic voices

Share facts, not myths

Use respectful, inclusive language

Challenge stereotypes in media and everyday life

Create spaces where neurodiversity is celebrated

Autism isn’t a flaw—it’s a different way of experiencing the world. Let’s build a society that embraces that difference.
