Independence AND Interdependence: Finding the Balance
Sometimes in ABA, we can become so focused on building independence that we forget a crucial truth: being an adult means knowing when and how to rely on others for support. Real life isn’t about doing everything alone—it’s about building the skills to navigate both independence AND interdependence.
Take something as simple as working on a puzzle together. A learner might:
✨ Independently sort pieces by color or pattern
✨ Ask for help when they’re stuck on a tricky section
✨ Celebrate small wins with their support person
✨ Learn to offer help when their partner needs it
This isn’t dependence—it’s learning the art of collaboration that makes us human. The goal isn’t to eliminate all support, but to teach when to lean on others and when to step forward independently.
Let’s remember that the most successful adults aren’t those who never need help—they’re the ones who know how to ask for it, accept it gracefully, and offer it in return.

If I had to throw away all of my kids' toys and keep just ONE, magnetic tiles would be the winner every time 🥇 And not just because I could spend hours creating epic castles alongside them - but because of the incredible learning opportunities that naturally embed into play. 🏰
The sensory benefits alone make them worth it - the satisfying tactile feedback, that perfect click when tiles connect (don't you just love that sound? 😌), and the stunning visual input from their vibrant, translucent colors creating a stained-glass effect in the light 🌈 These simple interactions support hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and motor planning while also being incredibly entertaining.
Beyond sensory input, magnetic tiles naturally encourage problem-solving, spatial awareness, creativity, and early STEM concepts 🧠 They're perfect for independent play (a parent favorite!), quiet enough for sensory-sensitive environments, and engaging enough to hold attention for extended periods ⏳
Whether we're filling our own children's toy boxes or packing our therapy bags, magnetic tiles consistently prove their worth 🏆 You can find them everywhere - from Amazon to thrift shops, or locally at (as seen at the top of our picture) 🚗

What's your favorite way to play with magnetic tiles? We'd love to hear your creative ideas! ✨

We all want our kids to have not just a successful summer, but a happy, fun, and magical one. ✨ That's what childhood should be, right?
As parents, our role isn't to make summer easier - it's to provide the support that makes all major transition, including summer, more predictable. Safer. 🖤
When it comes to the summer transition, the sudden lack of structure can feel overwhelming and scary for all kids, especially neurodivergent children. 😟
So here's how to incorporate some flexible predictability to your summer plans:
✅ Keep some anchors - Morning routine, meal times, bedtime ritual
✅ Visual schedules aren't just for school - Even for "lazy" summer days. Pro Tip: Keep it simple - paper and pen works just as well as the most colorful, laminated, velcro schedule.
✅ Plan transitions within transitions - Prep for changes throughout the day. Use tools like timers, transition warnings, and proactive reminders for how to manage difficult feelings (before they show up).
✅ Honor processing time - Summer doesn't mean everything needs to be spontaneous. Life is unpredictable, so teaching children how to be flexible is an important skill. But you don't have to go all in - meet them where they're at, and gradually add in spontaneity from there.
The goal isn't to recreate school at home. It's to create summer rhythms that feel safe and predictable... and FUN! ☀ Share this post with a parent navigating summer transitions ↗️

“AND.” - one of our favorite words ✨
The truth is, summer - while exciting, freeing, and filled with fun for many children - becomes a little more complex as an adult with kids. And as a parent with a child with special needs there’s an added dimension. ☀
In using “AND” instead of “but” we acknowledge that both feelings can exist together, and neither feeling negates the experience of the other. “I love having my kids home, and it’s also really freakin’ stressful!” 😆
So whether it’s the summer transition, or any other situation where your emotions are all over the place - try acknowledging your experience with an AND. ✨

Summer is calling - are you ready to get creative? 🌈
The BEST learning opportunities occur when we can:
👀 See through a child's eyes - that pool noodle isn't a pool toy, it's a light saber!
🎨 Embrace the mess - learning gets wonderfully messy sometimes
⏰ Follow their lead - when they're engaged, that's your cue to keep going
🌟 Say "yes" to their wild ideas - "Can we turn this into a spaceship?" Sure can!
You'll naturally create opportunities for language development, social skills, and motor growth while helping your child generalize learning across different play scenarios 🔄
Okay, your turn...! 🚀 Take ONE ordinary item in your house right now and brainstorm 3 completely different ways to play with it. Share with us in the comments!! 👇

🎵 Summertime and the living’s easy... 🎵 Well, maybe not easy but definitely more flexible! 😂 We’re rolling out Ovation summer schedules over the next week! Scroll through and read on to learn more about what this means for our ABA practice...
Our scheduling process is one of the biggest things that sets us apart 📅
It’s a HUGE project behind the scenes, but the payoff is well worth it - creating outcomes that align with our core values, family connection, and work/life balance. ✨
So WHY do we take on the massive undertaking of summer schedule overhauls just to do it all over again in the fall? 🤯
🚨 Spoiler alert: it’s not about cutting back on ABA, disrupting what’s working, or shaking up your comfort zone - it’s a thoughtful and intentional part of our practice, designed to make our services work BETTER for your family’s summer rhythm and honor our incredible BTs who thrive with seasonal flexibility too! 🤸
The bottom line is that we’re committed to continuity of care that flows with your life, not against it. ☀️ Questions about summer scheduling? Drop them below! 👇
