Dr. Janine Negron PT, DPT, Dance Medicine Specialist Rehab, Recovery, and Cross Training for Dancers. She graduated from Seton Hall University in 2017 earning her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Dr. Janine Negron PT, DPT, BFA discovered her passion for Physical Therapy following a series of injuries sustained during her years as a professional dancer. After undergoing extensive therapy she realized there was a need in the industry for more practitioners who understood dancers, gymnasts, and the active population, thus began her journey. Prior, Janine earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Danc

e Education at the University of the Arts in 2006 and danced professionally with New Jersey Music and Dance Company. Additionally she continues to teach dance throughout the tristate area and owned an award winning dance studio. She is a Board Certified Physical Therapist and NJ State Certified Dance Instructor as well as a Member of the National Dance Education Organization, International Association for Dance Medicine and Sciences, and the American Physical Therapy Association. Janine has treated dancers and performers from New Jersey Ballet Company, Papermill Playhouse, and various local dance studios in the tri-state area. In addition, she has worked with professional and pre-professional athletes at New York Sports Science Lab and with NJFassst, as well as with patients in Inpatient Acute Care Hospital setting, and school-based pediatric setting using the Neurodevelopmental Treatment approach. Janine uses her unique background in dance, acrobatic, Pilates, and yoga to provide tailored, creative, and effective treatment plans, exercise programs, and neuromuscular reeducation. Janine brings energy, creativity, and compassion to Thryve Healing and Performance and readily passes her love for health, wellness, and fitness onto her patients.

Dr. Megan Liberty PT, DPT, Dance Medicine Specialist

Megan has been involved in both the dance and community theatre worlds since the age of three. Growing up, she yearned to bridge her love for performance with her desire to help others, leading her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a Minor in Performance Studies from the University of Delaware. She then went on to complete her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Rutgers University, and works to bring passion and energy to her care every day.

With over 10 years of orthopedic experience, including completing a Residency program with the Hospital for Special Surgery, she strives to utilize the latest evidence-based techniques in her practice. She is excited to contribute to providing the best care for performing artists, recognizing the importance of proper treatment and unique focus for this population.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

I first came to Dr. Negron around 3 years ago for back pain I was having during and after classes. She immediately noticed that one side of my hip was hiked up and leaning foward. We got started with corrective exercises, which then turned into overall strength training. I noticed an immediate difference and my pain was lessening, making it much easier to dance.

Then recently right before the new dance season, i suffered an ankle injury and she helped me through it the whole way. Even in crutches she had me working my exercises and I also benefited from things like cupping, and red light therapy. She got me through the whole dance season safely, and dancing to my fullest.

I’m and so greatful I picked Dr. Negron to make me the best I could be.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

After months of physical therapy for my knees, I started seeing Dr. J in December 2024.

Dr. J, specializes in dance PT, and immediately noticed that the real issue was actually a hip displacement — one side was hiking up. Her approach got to the root of the problem and with new exercises, recovery work, and continued strength training for my knees, I started noticing a difference almost immediately.

I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. J because she not only helped me heal, but also taught me so much about my body — knowledge that I’ll carry with me as I head to the University of Minnesota Dance Team. I’m taking these exercises and everything she’s taught me with me, and I know they’ll help me stay strong, safe, and healthy.

OUR TEAM IS GROWING!
Brighid McGahran - Office Manager

Brighid is from Middletown, NJ and began to train in ballet at age 11. Throughout her years training she came to Dr. Negron for knee and hip pain, and learned all about anatomy and exercise. After dancing as a trainee with the Cincinnati Ballet this past year as a senior in high school, she decided to take a different path and is going to the University of Scranton in the fall to major in Media Production and Journalism. She is so excited to be back working with Dr. Negron and the great team!

POINTE READINESS: A HOT TOPIC

As a physical therapist and dance teacher, I’ve noticed a lot of conversation around pointe readiness on social media.

Over the past couple years my intern and I have compiled research and data on this topic and created an E-Book that we think many of you would find valuable. HOW TO ENSURE YOUR DANCERS ARE READY FOR POINTE: A PHYSICAL EVALUATION FOR POINTE READINESS

It includes a series of tests and measures with a grading scale/chart that you can use objectively to show students, parents, and instructors whether a student is ready for pointe, taking the guesswork out of the process.

We think every studio and teacher whom grants a child access to pointe training should have a copy of this book. It is also a valuable resource for parents and students, giving them invaluable knowledge on what to expect moving forward in their journey to pointe work.

POSTURE AND PORT DE BRAS. Teachers! Stop telling your students to squeeze their shoulder blades back!

When we squeeze our shoulders back we are contracting the rhomboids. But, as you can see, the rhomboids have no direct attachement to the humerus or upper arm bone. Squeezing the shoulder blades back will also result in the undesirable lower rib “flare” in the front.

Furthermore, the scapula and humerus move in a 2:1 ratio and squeezing the shoulder blades back can limit proper scapulohumeral rhythm during port de bras leading to scapular dyskinesis. Additionally, squeezing the shoulder blades limits the ability of the rib cage to expand posteriorly or back… limiting air fill into the lower lobes of the lungs, the largest lobes in the body. Have you ever felt out of breathe far too soon while performing? Imagine someone who has just finished a marathon trying to catch their breathe. Instinctually they put hand on knees.

The rotator cuff, in contrast has a direct attachment to the humerus. When weak and over stretched, this can give the appearance of a ““round shoulder” posture. So how do we correct this?

A more effective cue to diminish the ““round shoulder” posture is to cue the dancers to find length across the collar bones or clavicles without Squeezing the shoulder blades. This will allow the scapula to move freely with the port de bras while giving the appearance of an ”open” chest in the front and maintaining the ability to keep the lower ribs “closed”.

Full sole vs Split sole? Leather vs Canvas? What to Choose and Why.

A Split Sole Ballet Slipper can give the appearance of a higher arch. 🩰

This is also true of a Canvas Ballet Slipper because the material is less substantial than leather and commands less effort from the dancer’s feet. 🩰

Leather provides additional resistance and feedback because it is a more substantial material. 🩰

A Full Sole acts as a small resistance
against a dancer’s foot allowing
the foot intrinsic muscles to develop while the dancer learns to manipulate the full length of the foot with feedback from the shoe.

Choice will depend on your end goal. If your are looking for an aesthetically pleasing appearance, in performance for example, choose a split sole canvas or leather. If your are looking to build strong feet, in preparation for pointé for example, choose a full sole leather ballet slipper. 🩰

Advanced dancers whom have developed the strength to articulate their feet through the shank of a pointe shoe may choose either. 🩰
