The American Academy of Pediatrics, Rhode Island Chapter is heartbroken by the mass shooting at Brown University. We offer our deepest condolences and support to the victims, their loved ones, the Brown University community, and all those impacted, locally and beyond.

Gun violence is a public health crisis. Children and young adults deserve to learn, live, and grow in safe communities. We must move beyond thoughts and prayers to evidence-based actions that prevent firearm injury and support healing.

Trauma support resources are available and families can also reach out to their pediatrician for support and guidance.

A healthy school environment is key for all children to learn and grow. Immunizations are one of the most important steps we can take to protect kids in the classroom, helping to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and promoting a safe learning space.
We have the tools to send kids to school protected from preventable illness. Across the country, cases of measles – a vaccine-preventable disease – continue to rise, putting children at risk. Childhood vaccinations protect your kids and keep them in school and ensure our youth remain healthy for years to come.

American Academy of Pediatrics has released our annual update to our immunization recommendations to best help children and adolescents build immunity and stay healthy.
Since our founding in the 1930s, the AAP has been creating evidence-based vaccine recommendations that are rooted in the latest science and our deep clinical knowledge about children’s health.
With misinformation about immunizations spreading, AAP is publishing our own, independent vaccine recommendations, including updated recommendations for RSV, influenza, and COVID-19. Read our full policy statement to learn about AAP's updated immunization schedule.

Some individuals wrongly assert there is a link between vaccines and autism. Before the claim was discredited, researchers took it seriously, investigated it thoroughly, and found no link. This research, in many countries, involving thousands of individuals, has spanned multiple decades. Any effort to misrepresent sound, strong science poses a threat to the health of children and does a disservice to the autistic community.
Immunizations are important to help children stay healthy, so they can learn, grow and thrive. If parents have questions about vaccines or autism, we encourage them to talk to their child’s pediatrician. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4nI0Rnb
