Did anyone else grow up constantly hearing:
โStand up straight.โ
โGet your shoulders back.โ
For me?
Hereโs the thing โ that cue was never wrong.
It was just missing the starting point.
Enter Starvin Marvin ๐
My grad school skeleton demonstrating anterior pelvic tilt.
The pelvis (Latin for basin) holds organs, fluid, and pressure.
When that basin tips
โก๏ธ the lumbar spine increases its curve (hyperlordosis)
โก๏ธ the rib cage flares up and forward
โก๏ธ the shoulders round and drift forward
โก๏ธ the head and neck follow to keep you balanced over gravity
So when someone tells you to โpull your shoulders backโโฆ youโre trying to correct the top of the chain without addressing the foundation.
What often drives this pattern:
โข prolonged sitting
โข tight or dominant hip flexors
โข underactive deep abdominals & glutes
โข altered breathing mechanics
โข chronic stress and nervous system tone
The body always returns to the position it can breathe and stabilize from.
So yes โ shoulders back sounded right.
Starvin Marvin remembers.
Your body does too.
