Many people are told they have to use a “preferred pharmacy” to save money — but the truth is your copay is set by your insurance plan, not by the name of the pharmacy.

Here’s what actually determines your copay: • Your insurance plan
• The drug tier (generic, brand, etc.)
• Your deductible status
• The day supply and quantity

So whether you fill your prescription at a big chain or a local pharmacy, the copay is usually the same for the same medication.
