Our hospice crew believes that alll birthdays deserve celebration, whether it’s your first or 94th (like Jerry’s)! What better than celebrating by yourself? Celebrating with your friends, family, and neighbors. Our team was happy to provide donuts for Evans residents and staff to honor Jerry’s big day!

Thank you to all who served, this Veterans' Day and always! Howard County Community Hospice staff believe our Veterans deserve recognition from the day they start serving through the balance of their lives. Some ways we support our Veteran patients including: connecting them with hospice volunteers who have served, Veteran's Recognition Ceremonies, and helping connect them with local resources.

Yesterday we had the honor of recognizing Bill for his service. Thank you, Bill, for your sacrifices for our freedom, and thanks to your family for the love, care, and support they provide.

This month we will be sharing stories of some of our hospice volunteers! Our volunteers are an important part of our hospice service, and they help in many different ways. For example, Harlan Larson is happy to see patients or help out in the office, but he is best known for volunteering as Santa! He starts growing his beard in February so he can meet up with other volunteers and staff and carol at our local long term care facilities. That’s some serious dedication, but he tells us he loves it when residents get excited about Christmas, singing, and Santa. If you’re lucky, you might catch him next month at a facility near you!

Howard County Community Hospice Volunteers are simply the best! We held a volunteer recognition luncheon on Monday to celebrate and honor them! Our volunteers are pictured with our Director of Nursing, Kerrie, and our Volunteer Coordinator, Lisa.

We especially want to recognize our volunteers who have reached special milestones this year:

Our dietary team prepared s’more mix bags for them as our volunteers help give our patients “s’more” good days at home!

Once a year Howard County Community Hospice hosts an eight week, book-based grief support group. This year’s group members “graduated” last night. The graduation activities are the group’s choice, and together they walked under the moon, shared foods that remind them of their loved ones, made special Christmas ornaments, and received special hearts made by a member. It was a great night. Our wonderful members did a lot of work and helped each other a great deal, and we are so thankful they joined us.

Our social worker helped us kick off National Care at Home Month and Hospice Week with a presentation at the Howard County Historical Society! Brecka shared about hospice care and the history of hospice.
