Happy Mother’s Day from our crew! This year we had a special Mother’s Day HOPE (Hospice Opportunities for Positive Experiences) Project. We currently have a patient who is an avid reader with a large family, so our crew secretly collected Mother’s Day cards, letters, and pictures from them and bundled them together with books and her favorite snacks. She’s also a dog fan, so we enlisted hospice dog, Kinnick, to help drop them off!

Our hospice crew loves going the extra mile for our patients, and right now we need your help! We provide CD players for our patients to use, and we currently have a patient who is a big fan of the Man in Black. We're looking for a few unwanted Johnny Cash CDs to help ground them, brighten their day, and make things feel more like home. If you have unwanted Johnny Cash CDs that you are willing to donate, please drop us a line!

Our whole team works hard to understand the best ways to work with our patients who are living with dementia, and to educate their families.

One of our favorite experts on dementia, Teepa Snow, explores whether or not correcting our loved ones or people in our care is worth it in the podcast below.

Here's what you'll learn:

· Why correcting a person living with dementia often feels like an attack, even when it's well-intentioned

· How to slow down and use curiosity instead of confrontation ("So you're thinking it was me that owned that type of camera?")

· A practical reframe for everyday moments — wet pants, spilled soup, mistaken identities — that protects dignity and the relationship

· Why it's better to be kind than to be right is a skill, not just a saying

It was a crowded house at the “Just One” teen su***de prevention and mental health awareness event in Decorah tonight! Our crew was on hand to share behavioral health resources available through Regional Health Services of Howard County, encourage groups to take advantage of free QPR su***de prevention courses offered by our team, and share information on grief support and other free programs we offer in the Decorah area. Thanks to some of the Decorah area churches for putting it on and including us! As we learned, just one interaction can help save a life, and just one person can make a difference.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or considering su***de, please call or text 988 for immediate support.

This week is , and we'd like to shine a light on our amazing volunteers and thank them for all they do!

Meet Vickie, one of our hospice volunteers! Vickie's mom was on hospice, and she saw how much she benefited from hospice enriching her days. She especially enjoyed music therapist and chaplain visits. Hospice also was present for the whole family.

After she retired as a nurse from Mayo clinic, she was asked to join our team as a part time hospice and home health nurse. Vickie says. "This has been a privilege beyond measure."

She started volunteering for us by taking photos for hospice, but wants people to know that there are so many different ways to volunteer. She frequently makes lefsa and takes lutefisk dinners to people who can no longer attend events, which is very meaningful for them.

"Each person has a story to tell," said Vickie. She values each patient and their stories. And for patients who cannot share their stories, she says, "It's being able to help them by being with them in that moment. Enjoying just sitting with them, looking at family photos."

Vickie believes that being part of a caring and compassionate local healthcare team is the best way to wind down a rewarding career in nursing, and her volunteering will continue! She says that four words describe what being a volunteer means to her, "It feeds my heart."

Thank you, Vickie, and all of our incredible volunteers. We, and our patients, are so lucky to have you!
